The orientation lock of iPhone lacks context awareness. Opening Netflix or YouTube won’t disable the lock, nor will the opening of a news-reading app enable it. Thankfully, there is a an available Shortcuts automation that will help you to automatically toggle the orientation lock when you are using certain apps.

If you have an iPhone that is running the iOS 14.5 or higher iOS, you already have access to a Shortcuts action that is called the “Set Orientation Lock.” 

The Automation feature in the Shortcuts gives supports to many triggers, ranging from the day time to opening or closing apps. In this article, we’ll focus more on the opening and closing of the app trigger.

When making use of the Orientation Lock action in a shortcut, you can create different multiple automations depending on what you need. For example, you can simply just disable the orientation lock when you are opening your YouTube or Netflix. Then, you can create another one for the reenabling when are closing the Netflix or YouTube app.

 

Setting Up An Automation That Disables Orientation Lock

In the following article, we’ll walk you through the process of setting up an automation that disables orientation lock when you open an app (Netflix or YouTube).

 

1. Getting started, first, open the “Shortcuts” app on your iPhone and then navigate to the “Automations” tab.

 

2. Click the Automations tab from the Shortcuts app

 

3. Click  the “+” button from the top.

 

4. Tap on Plus button from Automations tab

 

5. Select the “Create Personal Automation” option.

 

6. Click Create Personal Automation

 

7. Now, from the triggers list, click the “App” option.

 

8. Choose App as Trigger

 

9. Here, click the “Choose” button from the “App” section.

 

10. Click Choose from App

 

11. Search and add the app that you want creating the automation for. You can select multiple apps here as well. Click “Done” to save your selection.

 

12. Select Apps as Triggers

 

13. Be sure that you choose the “Is Opened” option. Selecting this option will make sure that the automation runs when you open the selected apps. Then, click on the “Next” button from the top.

 

14. Configure Automation and Click Next

 

15. Now It’s time to create the shortcut. Here, click the “Add Action” button.

 

16. Click Add Action from Automation

 

17. Search for and add the “Set Orientation Lock” action.

 

18. Choose Set Orientation Lock Action

 

19. By default, this action is already set to toggle the orientation lock. But now we want to disable it, so click the “Toggle” button for more options.

 

20. Tap Toggle

 

21. From the pop-up, select the “Turn” option.

 

22. Next, click the “On” button so that it switches to the “Off” settings. The shortcut is complete now. Click the “Next” button.

 

23. Select the Off Option and click Next

 

24. The shortcut automation will send you a notification by default that you’ll have to click to trigger the automation. Toggle off the “Ask Before Running” option for this feature to disable.

 

25. Click to Disable Ask Before Running

 

26. From the pop-up, click the “Don’t Ask” button to confirm.

 

27. Now, this automation will automatically run in the background. Once you’re done with that, click the “Done” button.

 

28. Click "Done" to Save The Automation

 

And that’s all there's to it. The automation is complete now.

 

Conclusion

The next time you are opening the Netflix or YouTube App, you’ll see a notification that is saying the app has triggered the shortcut. 

That you’ve now created the automation to disable the portrait orientation lock whenever you are opening an app, you can also still create another automation to reenable it when you want to close the apps. You just to follow the instructions above with a few modifications.
