Alberta Tech Commercialization Supported by Federal Funding for A100, HaloHealth, and Intergen

business .

The federal government’s strategic investment of $15.6 million into technology commercialization projects in Alberta marks a significant initiative aimed at driving innovation and growth within the province's tech sector. This funding, managed by Prairies Economic Development Canada (PrairiesCan), will be allocated to 16 distinct projects, each supported by a notable non-profit organization.

PrairiesCan, the federal regional development agency serving Alberta, Manitoba, and Saskatchewan, is dedicated to enhancing economic development across these provinces by providing focused support and strategic investment. Its initiatives aim to stimulate growth and innovation within these regions, driving forward regional economic opportunities and supporting local businesses and industries. Through targeted programs and investments, PrairiesCan works to address specific regional needs, fostering a more robust and competitive economic environment throughout the Prairie provinces.

Among the beneficiaries is A100, a leading organization in the Alberta tech community known for its support and mentorship of tech founders. A100 is set to receive approximately $269,000 to further develop its Start Alberta platform. This platform plays a crucial role in connecting tech companies with investors and provides valuable real-time data to founders and other stakeholders. Initially focused solely on Alberta, A100 plans to leverage this funding to expand its reach across Western Canada, enhancing its ability to support tech startups throughout the region.

Another recipient, InterGen, a Calgary-based organization, will receive $1.3 million. InterGen is renowned for its scaleup fund and talent matching program, which connects less experienced entrepreneurs with seasoned industry professionals. This support aims to help Alberta’s digital technology businesses grow, enter new markets, and attract investment. InterGen has previously invested in several successful Alberta tech companies, including ZayZoon, Athennian, and StellarAlgo, demonstrating its commitment to nurturing local talent and innovation.

HaloHealth, an angel investment group headquartered in Toronto, will be allocated $260,000 to establish a presence in Alberta. HaloHealth specializes in providing advisory and business development services to healthtech startups. The firm has a track record of supporting Canadian companies like Clinify, Felix, and Wisedocs. Recently, HaloHealth led a funding round for RetinaLogik, a Calgary-based startup that has developed a portable eye test device. This funding will enable HaloHealth to extend its expertise and resources to Alberta's burgeoning healthtech sector.

PrairiesCan Minister Dan Vandal underscored the strategic importance of this investment, noting that it is designed to provide Alberta businesses with the necessary tools and resources to innovate and compete on both a national and global scale. By supporting these organizations, the federal government aims to drive technological advancement and economic growth in Alberta, thereby enhancing the province's competitive standing in the tech sector.

This investment is anticipated to lead to substantial progress in technology commercialization, helping to refine and accelerate the development of innovative solutions. As a result, Alberta's tech ecosystem is likely to experience significant benefits, including increased opportunities for startups, expanded market reach, and greater attraction of investment. This funding not only supports individual projects but also contributes to the overall economic vitality of the province, positioning Alberta as a key player in the evolving technology landscape.
