RunQL, a Kitchener-Waterloo-based startup, has announced the successful closure of a $1.6 million CAD pre-seed funding round, aimed at revolutionizing the way data and development teams document and manage queries. The funding round, which was completed in late May, was led by Mistral Venture Partners, with additional contributions from MaRS Investment Accelerator Fund, Inovia Capital, the University of Waterloo Velocity Fund, and several other Waterloo-based founders whose identities have not been disclosed. The round was structured using Simple Agreements for Future Equity (SAFE), a popular instrument for early-stage funding.

RunQL’s innovative platform is focused on solving a long-standing issue that has plagued data professionals and developers for years: the chaotic and inefficient management of queries. The platform offers a streamlined and centralized solution that allows users to write, save, document, and track multiple versions of queries with ease. The company’s goal is to become the central repository for all queries used within organizations, ensuring better organization and improved collaboration between teams.

Rob Darling, the founder and CEO of RunQL, highlighted the challenges faced by growing data teams, which are often burdened with outdated tools and ineffective systems for managing queries. As organizations expand their data operations, the need for modern, collaborative tools becomes even more pressing. Darling believes that RunQL’s platform will not only help data teams become more efficient but also ensure better discoverability of existing queries, thereby reducing duplication of effort and improving overall productivity.

Darling brings a wealth of experience to the table, with a strong track record in the tech and data sectors. Before founding RunQL, he served as the CTO of Communitech, a leading innovation hub in Kitchener-Waterloo, and was the founder of Briefed.in, a data-driven startup that was acquired by Communitech in 2022. His deep expertise in business intelligence and data management solutions, as well as his experience working with startups, has shaped the development of RunQL.

One of the key reasons that led Mistral Venture Partners to back RunQL was Darling’s extensive background and leadership skills. Raif Barbaros, a partner at Mistral, praised Darling’s proven success as a founder, emphasizing his reputation as an exceptional leader who possesses a deep understanding of the target market. According to Barbaros, Darling’s experience as a technical founder has provided him with valuable insights into the pain points that RunQL aims to address, making the company an attractive investment opportunity.

The platform that RunQL is developing promises to transform the way organizations handle queries by offering a unified platform that integrates query management and documentation. This is particularly beneficial in a world where teams are increasingly working remotely and in hybrid environments, where collaboration and streamlined workflows are essential. By simplifying query management, RunQL will not only save valuable time but also help organizations enhance the quality of their data-driven decision-making.

The funding round and the backing from experienced investors place RunQL in a strong position to expand its offerings and reach. With the pre-seed capital, the startup plans to accelerate the development of its platform, recruit talent, and expand its customer base. As the demand for more efficient data management tools continues to grow, particularly in light of the increasing complexity of data systems in modern businesses, RunQL is well-positioned to capture a significant share of the market.

RunQL’s ultimate goal is to become the central hub for query management within organizations, and the platform’s design reflects that ambition. The platform aims to make queries more accessible and easier to manage, eliminating common headaches such as managing different versions, ensuring proper documentation, and making it easier to discover previously written queries. By improving how queries are handled, RunQL is helping data teams work more effectively, collaborate seamlessly, and ultimately drive better business outcomes through improved data insights.

As RunQL continues to evolve, it is likely to become an indispensable tool for organizations looking to optimize their data workflows and foster more collaboration among teams. With its solid backing, experienced leadership, and clear vision for the future, RunQL is positioning itself as a key player in the rapidly growing data management and development tools space.
