Reversing the Decline: BDC’s New Effort to Boost Canadian Entrepreneurship
The Business Development Bank of Canada (BDC) has introduced a forward-looking community banking initiative that seeks to transform the landscape of small business financing in Canada. This groundbreaking program aims to address long-standing challenges faced by small business owners, particularly those in underserved demographics, by forging partnerships with over 80 community-based lending organizations. By doing so, BDC intends to provide targeted financial solutions and advisory services to entrepreneurs who have traditionally faced obstacles in accessing capital.
The initiative is designed to cater to a wide array of entrepreneurs, including those residing in rural or remote areas, younger business owners with limited or no credit history, and those pursuing innovative or unconventional business models. Through this program, BDC aims to strengthen the financial ecosystem by combining its extensive financial resources and expertise with the localized knowledge and networks of community organizations. This dual approach seeks to provide entrepreneurs with a unique blend of personalized support and robust financial backing.
As part of this initiative, BDC will support its community banking partners through co-lending arrangements, indirect lending opportunities, loan guarantees, and strategic advisory services. Currently, BDC has established partnerships with fewer than ten organizations, including Futurpreneur, the Federation of African Canadian Economics, and Québec City-based Evol. However, the Crown corporation is actively working to expand this network, with the ultimate goal of empowering up to 100,000 small business owners over the next decade.
This effort comes in response to a concerning trend highlighted in a recent BDC report. According to the report, Canada has seen a significant decline in entrepreneurship, with 100,000 fewer entrepreneurs operating in the country today compared to the year 2000. This decline has occurred despite Canada’s population increasing by more than 10 million during the same period, underscoring the need for proactive measures to foster entrepreneurial activity and support the growth of small businesses.
Adil Hassam, BDC’s Vice-President of Community Banking, emphasized the importance of collaboration in achieving the program’s objectives. “What we’ve seen so far from working with organizations such as Futurpreneur, Evol, and [the National Aboriginal Capital Corporations Association] is that by working together, it creates an exponential impact for entrepreneurs,” Hassam explained. “They get the best of both worlds, the community groups that know and support them best and the financial weight of BDC behind them.”
The initiative is not just about providing financial support; it also aims to deliver comprehensive assistance tailored to the unique needs of individual entrepreneurs. By working closely with community-based organizations, BDC seeks to leverage local insights and relationships to offer a more effective and meaningful support system.
