Could This Be The Best Premier League Title Race Ever?

The Premier League prides itself on providing compelling David-and-Goliath tales to keep fans enthralled with the game, producing multiple epic title races over recent seasons.

Roberto Mancini's Manchester City had led United by eight points with six games left to go when Christmas arrived, only for their lead to be cut by spring wobble.

Manchester City

Manchester City are reigning Premier League champions and their success since Pep Guardiola took charge has been unmatched in the top flight. Since he took charge, they have won an unprecedented five consecutive league titles; currently they appear likely to make history by becoming only the fourth club ever to do so in such an unbroken run of success.

Guardiola's side started their season off strongly, including victories over Tottenham and Manchester United. Though their form waned at times, they recovered well to reach the Champions League semi-finals - ending a 35-year trophy drought!

Jack Grealish from Aston Villa has provided Manchester City with an added boost in terms of their attacking options and ability to come from behind. The England winger can unlock defences with his speed and skill and adds to the quality already present at Etihad Stadium - and should he keep scoring goals at this rate, no one may ever catch them!

Manchester United

Fact is, United are still finding it hard to be truly competitive. There may still be hope they could catch City or Arsenal in January's late games if both slip up.

United's next big challenge comes on Sunday when they travel to face Liverpool at Anfield. United must demonstrate that Erik ten Hag's improvements are real if they want to mount a serious title challenge.

That was especially evident in their defense, where crosses could easily find ways through. That is why it was of vital importance that they increased defensive strength during the summer - it could prove key in their bid for top four and an elusive title; an incredible feat by the Red Devils.

Chelsea

Chelsea experienced years of financial uncertainty and hooliganism before Roman Abramovich purchased it in 2003. Since then, Abramovich has brought stability, top-class signings, and back-to-back Premier League championships.

But Chelsea have struggled in recent seasons to sustain their title challenge and finished 19 points behind Manchester City last term. Additionally, key players such as Diego Costa and Olivier Giroud left for other clubs while repeated missed chances by their forwards has put them in trouble this term.

Guardiola expects the Blues to return strong this season and believes they can challenge for the title once more with Romelu Lukaku providing them with extra firepower over an entire 38-game campaign.

Tottenham

At the tail-end of 2008/2009 season, Chelsea and United were locked in an epic struggle for supremacy. When Chelsea were defeated at home by Michael Ballack's double, Sir Alex Ferguson's Red Devils edged ahead and secured three titles!

Spurs have had an impressive start to their season under new manager Ange Postecoglou and briefly went five points clear at the top after beating Crystal Palace on Friday, but supporters should remain wary and not get carried away with optimism.

Their inexperienced squad has yet to show any sign of depth, so in order to compete with Man City they will need to improve. Their numbers, however, are encouraging: they boast fourth best possession percentage and fifth fewest goals conceded per match in the league - with no European commitment in four weeks they can prioritise Premier League fixtures - this could prove vital if title races remain tight.
