Introduction

When you first started coaching, you probably didn't think about how to manage your sessions. You just got on with it. But as a coach progresses through their career and becomes more experienced, they're more likely to start looking at how they can improve the way that they deliver their sessions. This article will give you some ideas on how you can make your coaching even better by planning ahead of time what your session is going to look like and then executing it in an effective manner.

Aims and objectives

The purpose of a session is to develop and improve players’ technical WPC2027, tactical and physical abilities.

Aims are the reasons you want to achieve something. For example, your aim might be to improve passing quality or work on your team’s defensive shape.

Objectives are specific targets that you aim for in order to reach your aim(s). For example, if your aim was “to improve passing quality” then one objective could be “the team will complete 80% of its passes at speed with accuracy within 10-15m from goal”. You may have other objectives as well such as “the team will use short passing when they have possession of the ball”, etc., which would collectively contribute towards improving passing quality.

Learning outcomes are what the players should learn during a session (e.g., how to pass accurately at speed). They should be SMART – specific/measurable/achievable/relevant/timely – so that it is easy for them (and you!) to tell whether they have achieved them or not; see our tips on writing learning outcomes below.* Performance outcomes describe how much improvement each player will make during a session; ideally this should not only include individual performance but also team performance (e.g., ‘players who were previously unable get involved in play now do so regularly’). They may also describe something about how well each player performs compared with expectations set before beginning.* Technical outcomes refer specifically to technical skills learned during sessions such as dribbling techniques and finishing moves

Different types of goals

You may have heard that goal setting is important, but how do you actually do it? Goal setting isn't just for sports and physical fitness, it's also relevant in other areas of your life. You can set goals for the future, present, past and even for things that haven't happened yet! When you think about it this way, setting goals becomes an essential part of life.

Writing session plans

A session plan is a document that outlines the structure of a coaching session, including the objectives and key points you want to cover in your training session. A well-written session plan should help you achieve your goals by providing a clear outline of what needs to be accomplished during each section of the training.

You can use session plans to develop players, coaches, teams and clubs as they are all important parts of sport development.

Managing sessions

Coaches are the most important factor in a soccer team's success. They must be able to manage their players, who can be volatile and unpredictable at times. The best way for coaches to do this is by having well-planned sessions, which will help them keep their players on task and under control no matter what comes up during training or games. Effective planning enables coaches to make sure that each session is progressive, fun, challenging and varied. Additionally, effective planning ensures that each session is structured well and organized with clear objectives that have been established beforehand. Finally, effective planning lays out how the coach will lead his team through each exercise so they know exactly what they should be doing while they're playing or practicing together

Coaching individual players

The content of your coaching style depends on the individual.

There are two main ways to approach this: using the same style for everyone, or using different styles for different people. The former can work well if you're confident in your abilities and want to be consistent with everyone. The latter can work well if you want to maximize the potential of each individual player on your team, tailoring their coaching style according to what they need at that moment in time.

You might also consider using a range of styles over time as part of an overall process of developing players' skillsets and personal qualities such as resilience and drive.

Player development stages

There are many stages of player development, and the coaching needs to be tailored to each stage. The coaching should also be tailored to the age of the players, their ability level, experience level and personality.

Players progress through these stages:

  • Beginner (age 8-12)
  • Intermediate (age 12-15)
  • Advanced (age 15+)

There is more to coaching than just delivering a session

  • Be clear about what you want to achieve
  • Be clear about the best way to achieve your goals
  • Be clear about how you will measure your success
  • Have a plan, but be flexible
