Mental health startup HelloBetter has secured over €6 million in a combination of cash and media-for-equity, bringing its total funding to €31 million. This latest investment further strengthens HelloBetter’s position as a leading innovator in digital therapeutics and expands its reach in the growing digital mental health sector.

Founded in 2015 by Prof. Dr. David Ebert, Dr. Hanne Horvath, and Dr. Elena Heber, HelloBetter has been at the forefront of scientific research in digital mental health. The company has built a reputation as a pioneer in digital therapeutics, developing evidence-based online therapy programmes that address a range of mental health conditions. HelloBetter currently offers ten digital therapy programmes, covering both common conditions such as depression, insomnia, and panic disorders, as well as underserved conditions like vaginismus and chronic pain.

A major milestone for the company has been the regulatory approval of six of its programmes by the German Federal Institute for Drugs and Medical Devices (BfArM). These prescription digital therapeutics (PDTx), also known as DiGA, are fully integrated into Germany’s standard healthcare system, making them free of charge for all publicly insured adults. The impact of this accessibility has been significant, with 120,000 patients already benefiting from HelloBetter’s programmes.

Building on its success in Germany, HelloBetter expanded internationally in 2022, launching HelloGina in the US market. This specialised platform focuses on sexual wellness support, particularly for individuals experiencing vaginismus—a condition that has been historically underserved in digital health solutions. In 2023, the company achieved another breakthrough when it received FDA approval for digital therapeutics targeting panic disorders, further validating its scientific approach and expanding its regulatory footprint.

A strong emphasis on scientific validation has been central to HelloBetter’s strategy. The company’s products have undergone 30 randomised controlled trials, with the majority of findings published in peer-reviewed journals. This commitment to rigorous research has reinforced HelloBetter’s credibility as a leader in evidence-based digital mental healthcare.

Headquartered across Berlin, Potsdam, and Hamburg, HelloBetter employs a team of over 150 professionals dedicated to advancing the field of digital mental health. The latest investment round was led by Mutuelles Impact—a fund managed by XAnge, with participation from MMV, HealthCap, Expon, and DVH Ventures.

A key priority for HelloBetter in 2025 is expanding into the French market. The company plans to leverage its partnership with Mutuelles Impact, a €95 million fund backed by 65 French Mutuelles, which are supplementary health insurance providers that complement France’s state-provided social security coverage. This strategic connection will allow HelloBetter to launch pilot programmes in France and pursue long-term partnerships, marking its first major expansion outside the DACH region.

By securing regulatory approval from the Haute Autorité de Santé (HAS), HelloBetter aims to integrate its digital therapeutics into France’s healthcare system, ensuring that its mental health solutions become widely accessible through nationwide reimbursement. This approval would allow publicly insured patients to access HelloBetter’s evidence-based therapy programmes without financial barriers, mirroring the company’s success in Germany’s DiGA system.

Beyond expanding its market reach, this move aligns with HelloBetter’s mission to democratize mental health care, making high-quality, clinically validated digital interventions available to a broader population. By reducing dependency on traditional in-person therapy, which can be limited by long wait times and provider shortages, HelloBetter’s expansion into France represents a significant step toward addressing the global mental health crisis through scalable, digital-first solutions.

With the backing of Mutuelles Impact—a fund supported by 65 French Mutuelles—HelloBetter is strategically positioned to navigate the regulatory landscape, launch pilot programmes, and forge long-term partnerships within France’s healthcare ecosystem. If successful, this initiative could pave the way for further European expansion, reinforcing HelloBetter’s role as a leader in digital therapeutics and setting a precedent for how digital mental health solutions can be integrated into national healthcare systems worldwide.
