Novakid has taken a significant step in expanding its global reach by acquiring the UK-based EFL (English as a Foreign Language) app Lingumi in a landmark deal. This acquisition will bring hundreds of thousands of new users to Novakid, advancing its mission to provide high-quality English education to young learners worldwide. The partnership allows Novakid to offer an alternative to traditional tutoring, empowering learners of all ages to access English education regardless of their income level.

Founded in 2017, Novakid has rapidly grown by offering online English classes for children using a unique curriculum that includes 25-minute learning blocks with trained educators. The company’s success was marked by a Series B funding round in which it raised $35 million, backed by leading firms such as Owl Ventures and Goodwater Capital. Novakid reached its profit targets in 2023, and currently boasts over 70,000 active users in more than 50 countries.

Lingumi, founded in 2016 and backed by top European investors like Entrepreneur First and LocalGlobe, offers AI-assisted, interactive lessons for young learners aged 2-6 years. The app has become a major player in English language education across Asia, with more than 2 million users benefiting from its speaking and phonics courses. Lingumi’s success is further demonstrated by the fact that 70% of its paying customers continue taking lessons after 12 months.

Max Azarov, CEO and co-founder of Novakid, expressed excitement about the acquisition, stating that it will open new doors for learners on the Novakid platform. He highlighted that students will be able to explore a learning ecosystem that integrates AI-driven tools, self-paced learning apps, and live online practice with native English-speaking teachers. The platform will also feature age-appropriate gaming elements to create a seamless and engaging learning experience.

Azarov also emphasized the importance of widening access to quality English learning from as early as two years old, particularly by offering free access to many learners around the world. Although the financial details of the deal have not been disclosed, it is understood that Lingumi’s significant business in China will remain independent, while its remaining customer base, UK team, and technology have been acquired by Novakid.

As part of the deal, Toby Mather, CEO and co-founder of Lingumi, along with a team of eight, will join Novakid to lead a new division called Novakid Junior. Services for existing Lingumi customers will continue, and Novakid plans to launch a new self-led learning product built on Lingumi’s technology platform by early 2025.

The acquisition of Lingumi marks a pivotal moment for Novakid as it strengthens its position in the global English learning market. By integrating Lingumi’s AI-driven, interactive learning platform, Novakid can now offer an even broader range of educational tools, catering to learners from a younger age and across more diverse geographies. This move not only enhances Novakid’s product offerings but also expands its user base significantly, reinforcing its commitment to making high-quality English education accessible to a larger audience.

The acquisition also signals Novakid’s readiness to compete at a higher level within the edtech industry, as it blends advanced technology with personalized learning experiences. With the creation of the Novakid Junior division and the planned launch of new products based on Lingumi’s platform, the company is poised to address growing demands for accessible, engaging, and effective language education. By combining Lingumi’s expertise in early learning with Novakid’s proven track record in online English classes, the company is set to solidify its leadership in the market while driving future innovation and growth.
