What are the ways for treating hearing loss?

health and fitness, healthcare, hearing loss treatment .

Most people tend to delay consulting an ENT doctor despite knowing the fact that hearing loss is one of the most common illnesses. What one does not realize is that this delay can lead to long-term damage. Among children, hearing loss can cause disruption in their education whereas in youth, it could lead to lower self-esteem and could even decrease job opportunities. Prior to knowing about the hearing loss treatment, it is important to be aware of the hearing types of hearing loss.

Types of Hearing Loss

Hearing loss may be classified into the following three categories:

  • Sensorineural Hearing Loss
  • Conductive Hearing Loss
  • Mixed Hearing Loss
  • Sudden Hearing Loss

Sensorineural Hearing Loss

This type of hearing loss is related to the sensory-neural parts of the ear. The sensory parts are responsible for sensing the sound waves. And the neural nerves are responsible for transmitting the signal of the sound to the brain. Damaging these parts due to any reason causes Sensorineural Hearing Loss

Conductive Hearing Loss

Conductive Hearing Loss, on the other hand, is that part of the ear that is responsible for conducting sound. The main parts of the conductive system include the middle ear and the outer ear. Hence, deformity or damage in these parts may lead to Conductive Hearing Loss

Mixed Hearing Loss

When an individual experiences both conductive hearing loss and sensorineural hearing loss, it results in mixed hearing loss. Suffering from both types of defects can lead to total hearing loss.

Sudden Hearing Loss

There are also instances where people tend to suffer from sudden hearing loss. Some of the causes of sudden hearing loss are ear infections, a loud blast or an explosion. If you are someone affected by sudden hearing loss then it is important to seek medical intervention immediately. On-time assistance from medical professionals can be helpful in saving hearing.

How can hearing loss be detected?

Hearing loss is most commonly caused by old age or continuous exposure to loud sounds. It is a gradual process and is not sudden or by chance hearing loss. At the initial stage, those affected by the ailment often find themselves hard to accept. In most cases, people affected by a hearing loss have the tendency to blame it on the situation or on others.

Following are some of the signs that indicate an individual is suffering from a hearing loss ailment:

  • The individual suffering from hearing loss might start missing out on words during conversations at work or at home.
  • Repeatedly asking others to repeat what they were saying.
  • Whether listening to music or watching Television, you keep the volume loud.
  • When someone speaks to you might feel that they are speaking unclearly or mumbling.
  • Your ability to clearly hear on phone might reduce.
  • You might feel that looking at the person helps in better hearing.
  • You might experience exhaustion after a lengthy conversation.
  • The chances of avoiding social functions will likely increase due to your inability to participate in a group conversation.
  • Earache, blocked ears, sudden ear pressure, or ear discharge might cause temporary hearing loss.

How to confirm hearing loss?

The above tips are an indication that will be helpful in determining whether an individual is suffering from hearing loss or not. If you experience any of those mentioned here then schedule an appointment with an ENT doctor or an audiologist at the earliest. The first step is to check if there is any ear wax or not.  In that case, you will need professional ear cleaning. The audiologist will use an otoscope for the purpose. Then follows the audiological test which will include one of the following:

  • OAE or OtoAcoustic Emission Test – This test will check the inner ear hair cells.
  • Pure Tone Audiometry Test or PTA – This test is to confirm the severity of the hearing loss.
  • Impedance Test – this test is to monitor if the middle ear is functioning or not.
  • ABR or Auditory Brainstem Response – this test is generally used for babies. It helps in measuring the response of the brain to the clinks and tones presented to the ears.

Hearing Loss Treatment

As per the reports of the tests, the Audiologist and the ENT doctor will be able to ascertain the type of hearing loss and its severity. The type of hearing loss will determine the type of treatment you will need.

Sensorineural Hearing Loss Treatment

The major causes of Sensorineural Hearing Loss are aging or accidents as it can weaken the nerves or damage the inner ear hair cells. This condition causes permanent hearing loss. Although the doctors might provide drug therapy, vitamin supplements or corticosteroids, unfortunately, there is no treatment for this type of hearing loss. The only remedy available so far is the use of hearing aids or devices.

 Conductive Hearing Loss Treatment

This type of condition is curable provided that the damage to the middle or outer ear is mild or moderate. Some of the causes of conductive hearing loss are as follows:

  • Accumulation of earwax
  • Obstruction caused by foreign objects
  • Bacterial or fungal Ear Infection
  • Abnormal growth in the Ear
  • Eardrum Perforation

Proper treatment of the above causes can easily reverse hearing loss.
