Since the early 1990s, many golfers on the PGA Tour have selected putters made by Scotty Cameron as their preferred brand. Cameron’s creations have been used by the best professional golfers in the world, including Tiger Woods, Peter Jacobsen, Jason Dufner, Mark O’Meara, Sergio Garcia, and Rory McIlroy. History
At the age of 6, Cameron joined his father in the workshop to begin working on putters. At the age of 12, he constructed his first new putter using a machine shop that was operated by the father of a friend. Soon after that, he moved a milling machine into the garage that belonged to his parents. At 22, he already had professional clientele, one of whom was O’Meara, who was performing on a mini-tour at the time.
Cameron was employed by prominent independent club maker Ray Cook when he was 23 years old, and he went on to consult for Mizuno as well as create and sell his own putters later on.
The turning point in Cameron’s career came in 1993 when Bernhard Langer won the Masters using one of Cameron’s designs for a putter. During the 1994 season, there were 129 golfers who used at least one Cameron putter at some point.
Late in the year 1994, Cameron entered into a commercial partnership with Titleist. As of the date of publishing, this relationship appeared to be progressing from strength to strength.
A Perfect Fit
Cameron makes personalized putters and offers a wide selection of ready-to-buy models. To better understand his customers’ situations, he uses video recordings. He may advise the golfer to fix a problem in their swing, or he may create a custom club to suit the person’s peculiar putting style.
Soft Edge
Cameron says that his years of video analysis have helped him create putters that are comfortable to use. He says that his putters’ signature soft trailing edge is a big hit with golfers since it helps relieve the tension that many players feel when putting.
Quick worker
According to a story of Cameron published in “Sports Illustrated” in 2002 titled “Putter King,” Cameron claims that he can make a custom putter for a professional golfer in just 13 hours after the golfer calls him with his requirements. His consistent success on the PGA Tour proves he is worthy of the praise he has received.
Critics
Cameron’s rivals in the putting design industry have charged him with copying for their own gain, citing the work of T.P. Mills and PING’s Karsten Solheim as inspirations. Cameron retorts that every designer uses the ideas of his predecessors, giving the examples of Mills and Solheim. Cameron admits borrowing some methods from Mills and Solheim but maintains, “My whole idea was to improve on their work.”
