IAS officers serve both the central government as well as different states, in this article, according to the 7th Pay Commission, the salary structure of an IAS officer as well as the allowances received by an IAS officer, the work done by him and a lot has been discussed. The number of IAS officers is only 4926 compared to the current population of 1403,309,897, which is 0.00035%, not 0.5%. Seeing this, anyone can understand why IAS officers are given so much respect.

IAS Officer: Salary Structure

The Government of India fixes the salary of an IAS officer. It is paid from the state fund. The 7th Pay Commission currently determines the salary (which will be discussed in this subject), but before that the Sixth Pay Commission determined it. The salary contains the original pay plus dearness allowance (DA) Plus Rent Allowance (HRA), which is usually 24% of the basic salary. The basic salary of an IAS officer in India starts at ₹ 56,100, which is an early salary of IAS and goes up to ₹ 2,50,000 based on several factors. However, gross salary cannot be determined, as it varies from one state to another. This is because it includes HRA (House Rent Allowance), which is different according to the state. However, the gross monthly salary of an IAS officer is around ₹ 56,000 – ₹ 1,50,000, which will vary due to allowances.

Salary Structure of an IAS officer: District Administration – This pay commission recommends the salary to the government employee. The Pay Commission was established in 1956. The most recent Pay Commission was constituted in February 2014. This is the 7th Pay Commission, also known as the 7th CPC. Because of this, UPSC students are attracted as the salary/pay scale of all officers will be the same based on their posts. For example, the starting salary of an IAS is ₹56100 and goes up to a maximum of ₹2,50,000 (Cabinet Secretary of India). As per the 7th Pay Commission, the salary of IAS officers also includes (DA, TA, and HRA). The chart given below shows the salary of IAS officers of various ranks.

IAS Salary: Perks and Other Benefits

An IAS officer gets many facilities and benefits. some of them are:

Total Salary = Basic Pay Dearness Allowance + Traveling Allowance + House Rent Allowance

Basic salary

Basic pay is the amount that excludes all allowances and gratuities. As per the 7th pay commission, this is the starting salary of IAS i.e. ₹56100 per month is IAS salary.

At the entry level, the basic pay increases by 3% every year till they are sub-divisional managers. This is not applicable in the case of the Cabinet Secretary, as it is fixed.

House Rent Allowance (HRA)

HRA usually ranges between 8% to 24% of the basic pay.

HRA depends on the city of posting the candidate, so HRA is not fixed as it varies from city to city and state to state.

However, the HRA amount will not be credited/added to the salary amount if the candidate resides in the accommodation provided by the Government.

Dearness Allowance (DA)

Dearness Allowance has been increased from 72% to 107% of the basic pay.

Dearness Allowance will increase twice in a year i.e. half yearly/6 months (January and July). DA will be increased on the basis of the inflation index. It is calculated according to the Consumer Price Index (CPI).

Dearness Allowance is a very important part of the salary of an IAS officer.

Traveling Allowance (TA)

An IAS officer gets government accommodation at a concessional rate. Even an IAS officer can book a room in Rajya Bhavan whenever he comes to Delhi. The government provides many other travel allowances to the IAS officers.

If an IAS officer is provided with a vehicle by the government, they cannot claim a traveling allowance.

Medical allowance

Medical expenses are also part of the salary of an IAS, medical expenses are reimbursed by the employer to the employee when the employee incurs any medical expenses.

So, written above are some of the allowances received by the IAS which are included in the salary. And many more such benefits.

The amount of salary received by an IAS is less than that of a private sector employee, the aim of clearing UPSC should not be just to earn a huge amount. Even though the pay scale of an IAS officer may not be very attractive, the other benefits and facilities one gets from the government are innumerable. No work gets so much respect among the people of India. So, you get an opportunity to serve our country.
