This tracer accumulates in the area of the body being examined, where it gives off gamma rays which can then be detected by the gamma camera.<\/p>\n<h1 id=\"0bfd\" class=\"lv lw ev be lx ly lz ma mb mc md me mf mg mh mi mj mk ml mm mn mo mp mq mr ms bj\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Overview<\/h1>\n<p id=\"75a2\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph kw kx ev ky b kz mt lb lc ld mu lf lg lh mv lj lk ll mw ln lo lp mx lr ls lt eo bj\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Nuclear medicine is commonly used in a variety of diseases including heart disease, stress fractures, bone or joint pain. Nuclear medicine provides functional information for many organs of the body. It can provide early detection of many diseases before these are detected by conventional radiology, allowing for earlier treatment and better prognosis.<\/p>\n<p id=\"34e7\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph kw kx ev ky b kz la lb lc ld le lf lg lh li lj lk ll lm ln lo lp lq lr ls lt eo bj\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">We use Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography (SPECT- CT). This technology uses a nuclear medicine gamma camera with a very low dose\u00a0<a class=\"af lu\" href=\"https:\/\/synrad.com.au\/services\/ct-scan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener ugc nofollow\">CT scan<\/a>. This further increases accuracy and precision of the diagnosis.<\/p>\n<p id=\"15dc\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph kw kx ev ky b kz la lb lc ld le lf lg lh li lj lk ll lm ln lo lp lq lr ls lt eo bj\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Some of the organ functions that can be assessed with Nuclear Medicine\/ SPECT include:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"\">\n<li id=\"884a\" class=\"kw kx ev ky b kz la lb lc ld le lf lg my li lj lk mz lm ln lo na lq lr ls lt nb nc nd bj\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Differential kidney function, assessment of hydronephrosis\/outflow renal obstruction<\/li>\n<li id=\"f77b\" class=\"kw kx ev ky b kz ne lb lc ld nf lf lg my ng lj lk mz nh ln lo na ni lr ls lt nb nc nd bj\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Heart blood flow and function (Myocardial perfusion scan)<\/li>\n<li id=\"93b1\" class=\"kw kx ev ky b kz ne lb lc ld nf lf lg my ng lj lk mz nh ln lo na ni lr ls lt nb nc nd bj\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Gallbladder function<\/li>\n<li id=\"34ac\" class=\"kw kx ev ky b kz ne lb lc ld nf lf lg my ng lj lk mz nh ln lo na ni lr ls lt nb nc nd bj\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Bones for fractures, infection, arthritis and tumours<\/li>\n<li id=\"1618\" class=\"kw kx ev ky b kz ne lb lc ld nf lf lg my ng lj lk mz nh ln lo na ni lr ls lt nb nc nd bj\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Screening for the presence or spread of cancer in various parts of the body skeleton<\/li>\n<li id=\"5746\" class=\"kw kx ev ky b kz ne lb lc ld nf lf lg my ng lj lk mz nh ln lo na ni lr ls lt nb nc nd bj\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Bleeding into bowel<\/li>\n<li id=\"052b\" class=\"kw kx ev ky b kz ne lb lc ld nf lf lg my ng lj lk mz nh ln lo na ni lr ls lt nb nc nd bj\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Presence of active infection\/inflammation<\/li>\n<li id=\"f5f4\" class=\"kw kx ev ky b kz ne lb lc ld nf lf lg my ng lj lk mz nh ln lo na ni lr ls lt nb nc nd bj\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Overactive thyroid, functional status of dominant thyroid nodules<\/li>\n<li id=\"6be2\" class=\"kw kx ev ky b kz ne lb lc ld nf lf lg my ng lj lk mz nh ln lo na ni lr ls lt nb nc nd bj\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Localisation of lymph nodes before surgery in patients with breast cancer<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h1 id=\"01c4\" class=\"lv lw ev be lx ly lz ma mb mc md me mf mg mh mi mj mk ml mm mn mo mp mq mr ms bj\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Preparing for a Nuclear Medicine Scan<\/h1>\n<p id=\"ec57\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph kw kx ev ky b kz mt lb lc ld mu lf lg lh mv lj lk ll mw ln lo lp mx lr ls lt eo bj\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Please bring your referral (letter from your doctor) and your Medicare and\/or Pension Health care card with you to your appointment. It is important to bring all previous imaging and reports relating to the region.<\/p>\n<p id=\"c8ac\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph kw kx ev ky b kz la lb lc ld le lf lg lh li lj lk ll lm ln lo lp lq lr ls lt eo bj\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">You will receive specific instructions for the procedure you are having at the time of making your booking. Some examinations do require fasting and some may require ceasing medications.<\/p>\n<p id=\"7ac1\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph kw kx ev ky b kz la lb lc ld le lf lg lh li lj lk ll lm ln lo lp lq lr ls lt eo bj\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">As the test involves a radioactive injection, please advise the technician or physician if you are pregnant or if you are breastfeeding prior to your examination.<\/p>\n<h1 id=\"0514\" class=\"lv lw ev be lx ly lz ma mb mc md me mf mg mh mi mj mk ml mm mn mo mp mq mr ms bj\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Scanning<\/h1>\n<p id=\"5d05\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph kw kx ev ky b kz mt lb lc ld mu lf lg lh mv lj lk ll mw ln lo lp mx lr ls lt eo bj\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Scanning will vary depending on the examination being performed. With some scans the isotope is taken up very quickly, so the scan will take approximately 30 minutes. For other examinations you may need to return for a second scan after 2\u20133 hours or even later. Our reception staff and our technologist will advise you at the time of booking (particularly on the day of the test) how long your specific examination will take.<\/p>\n<h1 id=\"1943\" class=\"lv lw ev be lx ly lz ma mb mc md me mf mg mh mi mj mk ml mm mn mo mp mq mr ms bj\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Results<\/h1>\n<p id=\"c397\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph kw kx ev ky b kz mt lb lc ld mu lf lg lh mv lj lk ll mw ln lo lp mx lr ls lt eo bj\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Some nuclear medicine results require a large amount of data to be processed, therefore your results may not be ready immediately. This will emit gamma rays and will get picked up by the gamma camera to construct images.<\/p>\n<p id=\"b16a\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph kw kx ev ky b kz la lb lc ld le lf lg lh li lj lk ll lm ln lo lp lq lr ls lt eo bj\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\"><strong class=\"ky ew\">Are there any side effects from the injection?<\/strong><br \/>\nIt is very rare to have an allergic reaction (and there is no cross- reaction between radioactive tracers and the intravenous contrast used for CT scans or angiograms), but a radiologist is present if a situation arises. If you have previously had reactions to nuclear medicine radioisotope injections (eg. Itchiness, rashes etc.), please notify our technologist before the injection.<\/p>\n<p id=\"c489\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph kw kx ev ky b kz la lb lc ld le lf lg lh li lj lk ll lm ln lo lp lq lr ls lt eo bj\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\"><strong class=\"ky ew\">Is it ok to be around children after my nuclear medicine exam?<\/strong><br \/>\nThe amount of radiation emitted from your body depends on the type of examination you are having. In general, this is quite small. However, you may prefer to minimise prolonged and close contact (particularly with small children) for up to 24 hours after tracer injection. If you are pregnant (or think you may be) or are breastfeeding, please inform our staff at the time of booking.<\/p>\n<p id=\"baf0\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph kw kx ev ky b kz la lb lc ld le lf lg lh li lj lk ll lm ln lo lp lq lr ls lt eo bj\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\"><strong class=\"ky ew\">Will I have to run on the treadmill?<\/strong><br \/>\nDepending on your doctor\u2019s request, for a myocardial perfusion study, you may exercise on the treadmill (like the exercise stress test, so comfortable clothing and footwear would be preferred), and the tracer will be injected at peak exercise.<\/p>\n<p id=\"9237\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph kw kx ev ky b kz la lb lc ld le lf lg lh li lj lk ll lm ln lo lp lq lr ls lt eo bj\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\"><strong class=\"ky ew\">Why do I have to stop caffeine?<\/strong><br \/>\nIf you are having Persantin myocardial perfusion studies, any form of caffeine (including coffee, tea, coke or chocolate) may antagonise the desired effects of Persantin and interfere with the result of the test. Therefore, you will need to stop (any form of) caffeine for 24 hours before the study.<\/p>\n<p id=\"7aad\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph kw kx ev ky b kz la lb lc ld le lf lg lh li lj lk ll lm ln lo lp lq lr ls lt eo bj\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\"><strong class=\"ky ew\">How long does the injection stay in my system?<\/strong><br \/>\nThe half life of Technetium is 6 hours. 24 hours after injection, there is only a negligible amount of isotope remaining in your body.<\/p>\n<p id=\"dcba\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph kw kx ev ky b kz la lb lc ld le lf lg lh li lj lk ll lm ln lo lp lq lr ls lt eo bj\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\"><strong class=\"ky ew\">Will I be able to drive after?<\/strong><br \/>\nYou should not feel any different or experience any drowsiness after the injection. Though, if you have had previous unpleasant experiences with needles or injections, please inform our technologist.<\/p>\n<p id=\"6bb0\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph kw kx ev ky b kz la lb lc ld le lf lg lh li lj lk ll lm ln lo lp lq lr ls lt eo bj\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\"><strong class=\"ky ew\">Why does the nuclear medicine exam take so long?<\/strong><br \/>\nAs the gamma camera is picking up the radiation emitted from your body to create images, this process will take time.<\/p>\n<p id=\"1817\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph kw kx ev ky b kz la lb lc ld le lf lg lh li lj lk ll lm ln lo lp lq lr ls lt eo bj\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\"><strong class=\"ky ew\">What is SPECT?<\/strong><br \/>\nSPECT stands for Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography. In this study, the gamma camera will rotate 360\u00b0 around the region of interest in your body and create 3D cross-sectional images.
