United’s decision-makers remain confident in Ten Hag, even as his players increasingly question his methods and approach. Due to various issues – like Jadon Sancho’s suspension from playing football as well as two separate incidents with Antony – United have become disorganized under Ten Hag’s watch.

However, they were let down by decisions taken at Copenhagen that went against them.

Manchester United

Erik ten Hag is determined to avoid becoming another Manchester United manager to be fired this season, which is why he insists they are making progress even after suffering successive home defeats against Newcastle United and Manchester City at Old Trafford.

Ten Hag blamed three key decisions for United’s 4-3 Champions League loss against Copenhagen on Wednesday, which ended their hopes of reaching the last 16. Rasmus Hojlund scored twice to give Denmark an early 2-0 lead, before Marcus Rashford’s red card changed everything.

Ten Hag acknowledged the referee should have shown Hojlund a second yellow card for his challenge on Lukas Jelert but couldn’t disagree with the decision after reviewing it. Additionally, Ten Hag felt the delay in showing Rashford his red card was excessive: ‘When frozen it seems harsh; this should never have reached this stage in the game!

Copenhagen

Manchester United’s 2023-24 season will go down as one of the most bizarre in history, and few chapters more bewildering than their Champions League debacle at Copenhagen will stand out more starkly than this chapter. When Parken Stadium announced itself as “Your Theatre of Nightmares,” that prediction proved accurate.

Erik ten Hag’s side twice appeared to take control of their Champions League group match against FC Copenhagen but were undone by an epic 4-3 defeat. Marcus Rashford’s red card – described by Paul Scholes and Owen Hargreaves as an “overly harsh decision” – was just one factor on an otherwise disastrous night for Erik ten Hag’s team.

Jonny Evans could make a long-awaited return for Manchester United against Luton on Saturday after nine years and 333 days since last appearing for them in Europe’s premier tournament. Should he be chosen, Evans will once more wear the armband following Harry Maguire’s withdrawal from squad duties.

Manchester City

Manchester City are an unstoppable force that have established themselves at an elite level of the game. After defeating Arsenal and dismantling last season’s title contenders, they remain favourites to claim victory this term.

The Premier League has referred City’s allegations of violating financial fair play rules to a commission for investigation, with potential outcomes including fines or removal from top flight status.

City fans have once more been left dismayed by refereeing decisions this season, following penalties given against Harry Maguire for handball and claims made that Copenhagen player blocked Andre Onana offside from an offside position, both which went against them and added to their frustrations. After winning all four group matches and needing just one point from two remaining matches against Young Boys before qualifying for the knockout rounds.

Fulham

Under Erik ten Hag’s tenure at Manchester United, they suffered back-to-back 3-0 losses against Manchester City and Newcastle; as such, pressure mounted and it seemed that Erik would soon find his position under threat should United fail to triumph at Craven Cottage.

But Bruno Fernandes’ stoppage-time winner secured United three points, giving ten Hag a breather from all the questions directed his way.

Jonny Evans will remain at centre-back despite his poor form, while new signings Mason Mount and Andre Onana could make their debuts. Luke Shaw, Lisandro Martinez and Tyrell Malacia remain injured. Raphael Varane may return after starting against Copenhagen; Victor Lindelof could return from illness; Amadou Diallo remains out.
