Most of the workday is spent seeing patients. Weekend appointments are usually fully booked, leaving little time for anything else, sometimes not even enough time to eat lunch. On regular weekdays it is not always extremely busy, so there is time to organize cases, prepare lecture slides, supervise postgraduate students on Typodont exercises, and handle other tasks.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

After clinic hours, there are usually one or two case discussion sessions each week. These take place after work and generally last about two hours. There are also one or two seminars each month, also held after work, often finishing around 9 p.m. Since these late finishes only happen once or twice a month, the overall workload feels fairly manageable. Weekends tend to be busier because of patient demand.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

After work is personal time. Besides meals and the occasional social gathering, I try to spend as much time as possible resting. For example, I might go home and fall asleep on the couch, then start working again around 9 or 10 p.m. Tasks include modifying Invisalign treatment plans, updating lecture PowerPoints, or answering private messages , I selectively answer questions, since many are about specific medical conditions and responding often has limited value. I also record notes from my studies and lectures.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Everything is prioritized according to deadlines. I have a tendency to procrastinate, not only until the deadline but often until the middle of the night. Last year, I spent three consecutive nights without sleep preparing a presentation for the Orthodontic Annual Meeting. A few days ago, while attending a conference in Brisbane, I was also preparing for an upcoming online seminar. I worked until 2 or 3 a.m. every night and still had to get up around 7 a.m. for meetings. I did not even have time to lose money at the casino.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

I usually go to bed around 1 or 2 a.m. Tonight is relatively relaxed, so I even have time to browse the internet. After finishing this answer, I can finally sleep. A few days ago, I stayed awake until after 4 a.m., and the next day I felt dizzy while driving and my vision was blurry. So never drive while fatigued.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

In the past, I had time to watch tv shows in the evenings. Now I rarely have that luxury. Sometimes I listen to them during my commute, but lately I often feel too tired and simply fall asleep as soon as I get in the car. I usually commute by car, bicycle, or a Xiaomi self-balancing scooter. However, I often end up taking an Uber. Once I confirm the driver knows the destination and route, I immediately go to sleep.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Daily clinical work does not change much. Another major part of life is attending conferences or taking <\/span>dental cpd courses<\/span><\/a> \u2014 the fate of an orthodontist. In a single year, I may attend more conferences than some dentists attend in their entire careers. These days I skip low-quality lectures and conferences.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

I also serve as a teaching assistant for training programs run by respected experts. Teaching and learning go hand in hand. The training program is also excellent. Students often ask questions that I have never considered before.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Then there are annual meetings, summits, and other conferences. While the formal presentations may not always provide substantial new knowledge, informal conversations with colleagues are often incredibly valuable. Traveling for conferences means racing against time when work is busy and enjoying life a little when things are quieter. However, the longer you work as a doctor, the less personal time you seem to have.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Of course, every specialty is different, and doctors at different hospitals and clinics have different schedules and responsibilities. I focus solely on clinical practice and do not currently conduct research. At most, I give journal club presentations and read academic papers. Managing clinical and practice responsibilities already takes all my energy.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

My daily motivation is simply to live with urgency, as if every day matters.<\/span><\/p>\n
