Full List of Phones Losing WhatsApp Access in Nigeria from January 1

business .

As we move into 2025, WhatsApp is introducing important updates to its platform that could significantly affect users of older smartphones. Beginning January 1, 2025, the app will no longer be compatible with Android devices running the KitKat operating system or earlier versions. This means that some older smartphones will lose access to WhatsApp entirely unless their operating systems are updated to more recent versions. According to a report by Metro.co.uk, this update is part of WhatsApp’s ongoing efforts to maintain the app’s security, improve functionality, and ensure compatibility with modern devices.

For Android users, this change targets devices that have been in use for many years. Phones such as Samsung’s Galaxy S3, Galaxy Note 2, Galaxy Ace 3, and Galaxy S4 Mini are among those that will no longer support WhatsApp. Other affected Android models include Motorola’s Moto G (1st Gen), Razr HD, and Moto E 2014; HTC’s One X, One X+, Desire 500, and Desire 601; LG’s Optimus G, Nexus 4, G2 Mini, and L90; and Sony’s Xperia Z, Xperia SP, Xperia T, and Xperia V.

This update primarily affects individuals who prefer to hold onto their older devices for as long as possible, even after their technology becomes outdated. For some users, updating their phones to a newer Android operating system may allow them to continue using WhatsApp. However, for devices that cannot be updated due to hardware limitations, users will lose access to the app entirely.

Later in the year, a similar update will affect iPhone users. Starting on May 5, 2025, WhatsApp will stop functioning on iPhones running iOS versions earlier than 15.1. While some iPhone users will be able to update their operating systems to meet this requirement, others with older devices will not have this option. For example, iPhone 5s, iPhone 6, and iPhone 6 Plus users will no longer be able to use WhatsApp because these devices can only be updated to iOS 12.5.7.

Both the standard WhatsApp application and WhatsApp Business will be impacted by these changes, as both versions share the same system requirements. Meta, WhatsApp’s parent company, has stated that these updates are part of their regular maintenance practices to ensure the app remains secure, functional, and capable of supporting modern technologies.

For users who may be affected, it is crucial to check the operating system version of their device. If the operating system supports an update, upgrading to the latest version can help resolve compatibility issues and allow continued access to WhatsApp. However, for devices that are unable to support newer operating systems, switching to a newer smartphone may be the only solution.

These updates underscore the importance of keeping both software and hardware up to date in an era of rapidly evolving technology. While the number of people impacted by these changes is expected to be small, the move serves as a reminder that older devices may not always be able to support the latest applications. To avoid disruptions, users are encouraged to evaluate their current devices and determine whether they can meet modern app requirements. Maintaining updated technology is essential for staying connected and ensuring continued access to critical apps like WhatsApp.
