On a related note, if you’re browsing speed is slow due to a bad internet connection then perhaps it’s time to dial the Cox customer service phone number. That said, here are five tips to speed up your Windows 10:

Install the Latest Updates and Drivers for Windows 10

Most guides on the internet will recommend the same. Installing the latest operating system on your PC is crucial to good performance. Make sure to have the latest version of Windows on your laptop or PC. Your PC will also search for the latest device drivers during Windows updates. Having the latest drivers, and operating system will improve your PC performance significantly.

How to Check for Windows Updates

  • Click on the Start button
  • Got to Settings
  • Open Update & Security, followed by Windows Update
  • Select Check for Windows updates

Your PC will tell you about the status of the updates. Select Install Now to get the latest updates. Moreover, you can select install updates and shut down your PC or install updates and restart it. Restarting the PC after updates improves its performance.

Disable the Programs You Don’t Use

Running too many programs in the background can affect your Windows 10 speed. Having a lot of web browsers, applications, and programs can slow down your PC. It is advisable to disable the apps you rarely or don’t use at all. You can close such programs and restart your PC to see if that improves Windows performance. Simply select the restart button and wait for your PC to restart.

Alternatively, you can run the Program Compatibility Troubleshooter to improve your system speed. Troubleshooting can help you identify the latest updates for earlier versions of apps on your Windows. Sometimes, it happens that outdated apps will run on the latest operating system. The step-by-step process is listed below.

How to Run the Troubleshooter

  • Type Troubleshooter in the search bar on your taskbar
  • Click on Troubleshoot settings
  • Click on Program Compatibility Troubleshooter
  • Run the troubleshooter
  • Click on the program you want to troubleshoot and select next

Use ReadyBoost

You can use a removable drive to improve the performance of Windows on your PC. The process is called ReadyBoost. Using an external device like a USB flash drive will supply additional memory to your PC. You can also use a memory card if you don’t have a USB flash drive. However, make sure to use a memory card with 500 MB of free space or more. Moreover, the card must have a high data transfer rate. Here's how to use ReadyBoost:

  • Locate a USB port on Your PC
  • Insert the USB flash drive into the port
  • Open File Explorer on your taskbar
  • Right-click on the flash drive (or memory card)
  • Select Properties
  • Click on ReadyBoost followed by Use this device (your Windows will let you know if it can run ReadyBoost on your external device)
  • Select OK to begin ReadyBoost

You will find a file by the name of ReadyBoost.sfcache when you open your flash drive in the File Explorer. Open the file to know the space reserved for ReadyBoost.

Clean Out Disk Space

You can check your hard disk for low space. A bloated disk can affect the performance of your Windows 10 and slow down your PC. If that’s the case then you should clean out the hard disk. Thankfully, Windows 10 comes with a great tool to automatically remove temporary files and apps you don’t need. The built-in utility is called Storage Sense.

How to Enable Storage Sense

  • Select Start
  • Click on Settings
  • Open System
  • Select Storage

On the top of the screen, you’ll find a toggle. Turn it from off to on. Enabling Storage Sense will allow your PC to automatically delete unnecessary files. Storage Sense also removes files from the recycle bin. Alternatively, you can run disk cleanup to clean your hard drive.

Check for Malware and Viruses

Viruses and malware can affect the performance of your Windows. You will need to check for viruses or malicious software. If you see unexpected pop-up messages or continuously hear the sound of your hard disk then chances are there’s a virus on your system. It is advisable to run an antivirus and antimalware software on your system to prevent viruses from attacking your PC.

Scanning for Viruses

  • Click on Start
  • Go to Settings
  • Open Update & Security, followed by Windows Security
  • Select Open Windows Security
  • Open Virus & threat protection
  • Click on Check for updates
  • Click on Virus & threat protection
  • Run a quick scan

If your Windows still run slowly, try pausing OneDrive syncing or changing your PC’s power settings.
