How To Make Use of Your iPhone or iPad as an Apple TV Remote
Are you having trouble with your Apple TV remote or you misplaced it? Don’t worry, you can easily make use of your iPhone or iPad as an Apple TV remote instead right from Control Center. Here is how it can be set up.
Control Center Magic
Some years ago, you had to download a separate Apple TV Remote app on your iPhone and iPad to use with your Apple TV. But since the iOS 12 and iPadOS 13 came out, Apple has included this feature directly on your iPhone and iPad thanks to a button you can add to the Control Center.
1. To get started, open the “Settings” app on your iPhone or iPad.
2. Visit Settings on iPhone
3. In Settings, tap “Control Center.”
4. Select Control Center from Settings
5. In Control Center settings, scroll down until you find the “More Controls” section. Tap the plus button (“+”) that is beside “Apple TV Remote” in the list.
6. Tap Plus Next to Apple TV Remote
7. The controls will move to the “Included” list and will be added to the Control Center.
8. Now, exit Settings and turn on your Apple TV. Make sure that your iPhone or iPad and the Apple TV are connected to same Wi-Fi network. Unlike the traditional TV remote that uses infrared, this remote only needs the connection of Wi-Fi to work.
9. On your iPhone or iPad, swipe in from the top-right edge of your screen to open the Control Center. If you’re making use of an older iPhone with a Home button, swipe up from the bottom of the screen.
10. Swipe down from top-right corner to access Control Center on iPhone
11. Tap the Apple TV Remote button (That looks like the outline of a small Apple TV remote) beside the other Control Center icons at the bottom of your screen.
12. Open Apple TV Remote from Control Center
13. At the top of the Apple TV remote screen, press “Choose a TV,” and select the Apple TV device that you want to control with your iPhone or iPad.
14. Choose Apple TV From Top
15. If this is the first time you are setting, your device will ask for a four-digit verification code. Take a look at the code displayed on the Apple TV and enter the same code on your iPhone or iPad. Once your devices are paired, the Apple TV Remote will be linked straight to your iPhone or iPad.
16. The layout is similar to that of the physical Apple TV Remote. Using the top touchpad, swipe to navigate. You’ll also discover the buttons for skipping media and enabling captions when you’re playing something.
17. Below the touchpad, you’ll find buttons for Menu, Home, Search, Play/Pause, and Siri.

You can also use your iPhone or iPad to put the Apple TV to sleep and to wake it up (as long as your TV is powered up). Just tap and hold the Home button and then choose the “Sleep” option from the Apple TV to put it to sleep. To wake up the Apple TV, simply tap the Home or the Menu button.
All the best for you, if you hate entering the long passwords when using the physical Apple TV remote, you can make use of the onscreen keyboard of your iPhone or iPad to do it instead.
