How To Crop an Image Inside and Fit in A Circle In Photoshop
In the Adobe Photoshop, it is pretty easy for you to quickly crop an image and to put it into a non-rectangular shape such as the circle shape, which can become handy when visualizing round social media headshots. Here is how this can be achieved.
Getting Started
1. First, you have to open the image that you are going to crop with Photoshop on your Mac or on your Windows computer. In the Photoshop window, go to the “Layers” panel, which is located in the sidebar area on the right. In the Layers panel, find the “Background” layer and the tap on the lock icon next to it. If there is no lock icon, you do not have to do anything else.
Note: If you do not see any Layers panel, just tap on the “Window” in the menu bar and choose the “Layers.”
2. Click on the lock icon that is in the Layers panel on the Photoshop window, now in the vertical toolbar, you need to right click the Marquee Tool icon (the icon that looks like a rectangle that comes with a dotted outline) and choose “Elliptical Marquee Tool.”
3. Now choose the Elliptical Marquee Tool on the Photoshop window, and now that the elliptical selection tool is been activated, you should hold down the Shift key and then use your mouse or your trackpad to draw a perfect circle outline over the side that you want to crop in the photo. If you do not use the Shift key, you willl draw an ellipse.
4. After making a circle selection on the photo in the Photoshop window, if you have made the selection, now right click the selected area on the photo and then tap the “Select Inverse.” This will help you choose everything in your photo exception of the circled area.
5. Tapping the Select Inverse from Photoshop's context menu, If you are making use of Windows, press the Backspace key. If you are on the Mac, press the Delete key. This will remove the area that is outside the circle in your photo.
6. Your photo will still have a lot of unused area around it. For you to remove this area, tap on Image > Trim in the Photoshop menu bar.
7. Getting to the Trim option in Photoshop's Image menu, In the Trim window, choose the “Transparent Pixels” in the “Based On” section. Then, you need to make sure that all of the boxes in the “Trim Away” section are well checked, and then tap “OK.”
8. After you have removed the transparent pixels from Photoshop's Trim window, the canvas size of the image will then be reduced to just the size of the circle portion that you cropped out of the image.
9. You will get circle shaped image in Photoshop, to save this image, simply tap File > Save As in the menu bar.
10. Select "Save As" from Photoshop's File menu, in the Save As window, choose “PNG” from the “Format” menu. The PNG format will preserve transparency (which is used by your circle-shaped photo), but JPEG does not.
Now all you need to do is save an image with Photoshop's save window. Then, you need to enter a name for your photo, choose a folder to save it in, and tap “Save” at the bottom of the window. That is it!
