On November 20, 2020, Xu was appointed chairman of the company's board of directors, following his appointment as the company's chief executive officer in 2013. Xu's appointment, according to Meta, is effective immediately. With the addition of Xu to the board of directors, Meta's board of directors now has a total of ten members.

Xu has stated that commerce will be a significant component of the metaverse, which implies that he will likely advise the board on such matters.
