Top seven social media trends of 2021 in Nigeria
This year's social media trends in Nigeria were dominated by a number of factors. With more than 27 million social media users, there were plenty of trending topics across all platforms, ranging from scandals to success stories and everything in between....
The trends ranged from amusing to divisive, raunchy, and potentially destructive to personal and professional relationships and businesses. Without further ado, here are the top seven media trends in Nigeria for this year.
The Silhouette Challenge
The challenge originated on TikTok, but it quickly spread to other social media platforms, including Instagram. It served as a precursor to the Buss It Challenge, which was launched later that year.
For example, whereas the Buss It challenge demanded that participants transition from casual to formal attire, the Silhouette challenge required participants to pose in a doorway before changing into a black silhouette against a red background.
After starting with Paul Anka's "Put Your Head on My Shoulder," the theme song quickly switches to Doja Cat's "Streets" as the subject shifts to a different silhouette challenge. It was a body-positive movement that encouraged women to be comfortable in their own skin and to express themselves sensually.
As a result, people of all shapes and sizes began to flaunt their frames on social media, gaining support, admiration, and praise.
In addition to Mercy Eke, the Big Brother Naija season 4 winner, Venita, another BBN reality show contestant, James Brown, and other participants, the challenge was attended by other celebrities.
The challenge, on the other hand, came to an abrupt halt when some participants began removing the filter that had been used to achieve the red appearance.
Lori Iro
An evangelist from the neighborhood, Gbadamosi Ismail, was featured in a viral video that started the trend. In the video, the man was admonishing young people against falling for the trap of fake love. In the video, he can be heard singing his sermon, which includes the lyrics "you are my honey, Lori Iro, you are my darling, Lori Iro."
Lori Iro is a Yoruba phrase that translates as "based on lies." Many people were warned not to fall prey to the traps of lying tongues during the Valentine's Day season, which is when the video gained widespread attention.
Users on social media jumped on the opportunity to reuse the line in a variety of contexts right away.
Even more impressively, a Nigerian music producer took the evangelist's words and created a danceable beat out of them.
Love Nwantiti Challenge
Chukwuka Ekweani, better known as CKay, is a Nigerian up-and-coming artist who recently released his love song, Love Nwantiti (Ah ah ah), on the music streaming service Spotify.
The song went viral on TikTok in late 2021 and gained even more popularity after Kendall Jenner, a global model, danced to the song on the Met Gala red carpet in New York the following year.
"A class by itself, the song is a masterpiece. There has never been another person who has done something like this before "For more information, please contact Temi Adeniji, managing director of Warner Music Group South Africa.
This is a factual statement, as the chart-topping single was named Africa's biggest-ever hit by Bloomberg, which is a reputable publication.
On TikTok, more than 3 million videos have been created with the sound, and it has also become the most Shazamed song of the month for September.
It all started as a dance challenge on social media, but it quickly evolved into a song for covers showcasing makeup, fashion, and other forms of art, among other things.
When the song was released two years ago, it rocketed to the top of several international music charts, propelling CKay to international fame.
Alcohol Challenge
"Alcohol," a new single by Joeboy, a Nigerian superstar singer, has been released on iTunes and Spotify. As a result of the Tiktok challenge that accompanied the song, it became a worldwide hit.
Currently, the vast majority of new songs include a variety of challenges that require listeners to dance or mime in time with the music. Because people were pouring various substances on their bodies, such as oil and sand, while the song was playing, this time around was different.
In some cases, people went so far as to ingest harmful substances. On one occasion, someone appeared to be drinking something that appeared to be an antiseptic before collapsing and being taken to the hospital. It had gotten to the point where the crooner was forced to come out and plead with fans to refrain from engaging in inappropriate behavior.
Because of this, in addition to refraining from dumping substances on your bodies, please refrain from ingesting anything that is not healthy for you. Allow us to take pleasure in the song while still alive. Bless
JOEBOY (@joeboyofficial) tweets on October 10, 2021:
Not all of the submissions to the challenge, on the other hand, were bad, and some of them managed to make social media users laugh.
This image from the #alcoholchallenge has gained my admiration.

Dorime
Ameno, a song by the French group Era, made a huge comeback this year after being out of print for several years. It became popularized by the nightlife industry, which used it to accompany the ordering of expensive drinks.
When you're forced to pause for someone's dorime, you're in the midst of getting into a rhythm.

The song quickly gained popularity on social media, where people were seen lip-syncing and dancing to it. Dorime has also developed into a slang term for extravagant spending on social media platforms.
Afrobeat and Amapiano have been incorporated into numerous remixes of the original song, the most popular of which is the Amapiano version by Goya Menor and Nektunez, which became a dance trend in its own right.

Nobody like woman
Simi, a talented Nigerian singer, was the inspiration behind the #nobodylikewoman challenge.
More than 12 hours from now, my single WOMAN will arrive at your location. I owe a debt of gratitude to every woman who has stood in the gap for the rest of humanity. Your willingness to be vulnerable exemplifies bravery.
I hope that in the future, we will be more aware of the words we speak and the seeds we sow, and that we will act accordingly. YEJiT4mHIW pic.twitter.com/YEJiT4mHIW #NobodyLikeWoman

In this case, it is about women coming forward and speaking out against the hurtful words they are subjected to on a day-to-day basis. Along with the trend, she also released a song and music video titled "Woman" to coincide with it.
A number of individuals across social media platforms, including celebrities, have gotten in on the act, posting images in black and white that are labeled with various insults directed at them.
