What is Wi-Fi Calling and how does it work
What is Wi-Fi Calling and how does it work?
Wireless calling, or W-Fi calling, allows users to make regular calls in areas with limited or poor connectivity by utilizing wireless networks. Only if your telecom operator supports Wi-Fi calling and if the subscriber has a strong Wi-Fi connection will this service function properly. When network connectivity is poor, compatible phones will use the Wi-Fi network to make regular phone calls through the telecom operator to which they are subscribed when the network connectivity is poor. In India, the vast majority of telecom operators, including Airtel, Reliance Jio, and Vodafone Idea, support Wi-Fi calling services. There is no additional charge from the telecommunications providers for this service.
The new Wi-Fi calling service will be especially useful in areas with limited network connectivity, such as rural areas. When Wi-Fi calling is enabled on a smartphone, it will make regular voice calls using the Wi-Fi network that is currently connected to the device. For example, if you're in the basement of a building with poor network connectivity but good Wi-Fi, you'll still be able to make regular voice calls without any problems. The goal of this service is to improve call quality while also reducing call drops. Instead of using the VoLTE (voice over LTE) network, the Wi-Fi calling service uses the VoIP (voice over Internet protocol) network to make calls.
How to make phone calls over Wi-Fi on an Android smartphone
The majority of smartphones that have been released recently are capable of making Wi-Fi calls. If users have a smartphone, they can check this by going into the network settings and searching for the option. If the option is not available, it means that Wi-Fi calling is not compatible with the phone's configuration. To enable Wi-Fi calling on Android phones, simply follow the steps outlined below.
1. Navigate to the Settings menu on your Android smartphone. Navigate to the section titled Networks (This could be called the Connections section or even Mobile Networks).
2. In the Networks section, select Wi-Fi Preferences and then Advanced from the drop-down menu.
3. Look for a feature called Wi-Fi Calling on the menu bar. If you have two SIM cards installed on your phone, users can choose which number they want to use it for by selecting it from the drop-down menu. Subscribers can even enable it for both phone numbers at the same time.
The option for Wi-Fi calling is available right in the Networks section of some phones, eliminating the need to navigate further into the Advanced section of some phones. Depending on the OS skins of different Android phones, the path to the destination may differ slightly.
How to make use of Wi-Fi calling on your iPhone
When using an iPhone, Wi-Fi calling is simple to set up as long as the telecommunications provider supports it. Take the steps outlined below to complete the process.
1. On an iPhone, go to the Settings menu and select General. Select Phone from the drop-down menu.
2. Select Mobile Data > Wi-Fi Calling from the drop-down menu (This will show up only if your telecom operator supports the service)
3. Select "Wi-Fi Calling on This iPhone" from the drop-down menu. The word Wi-Fi will appear after the name of your wireless carrier in the status bar if Wi-Fi Calling is available. Your calls will then be made using Wi-Fi Calling.
