Xiaomi Overtakes Samsung as Europe's Leading Smartphone Vendor in Q2 2021: Strategy Analytics

According to data shared by analyst firm Strategy Analytics, Xiaomi has surpassed Samsung as the leading smartphone vendor in Europe. According to reports, the Chinese company surpassed Samsung in terms of smartphone shipments in the second quarter of 2021, establishing itself as the market leader. According to Strategy Analytics, smartphone shipments in Europe increased 14% year on year to 50.1 million units in the third quarter. After Xiaomi and Samsung, Apple, Oppo, and Realme make the top-five vendors list — in that order.

Xiaomi shipped a record 12.7 million smartphone units in Europe in the second quarter, giving the company a market share of 25.3 percent. According to the firm, the vendor saw strong demand in countries such as Russia, Ukraine, Spain, and Italy.

Apart from the European market, Xiaomi has maintained a healthy growth rate in terms of global smartphone shipments. According to a recent report by IDC, the Beijing-based company surpassed Apple and finished second in global smartphone shipments in the second quarter.

Unlike Xiaomi, Samsung's second-quarter shipments fell 7% year on year to 12 million units, according to Strategy Analytics. However, the South Korean behemoth maintained a stronghold on the continent, with a 24 percent market share.

“Samsung is doing well with its new 5G Galaxy A series models, but it faces increasing competition from Apple in the high-end and Chinese vendors in the low-end, and it has failed to fully capitalize on Huawei's demise in Europe,” Strategy Analytics noted.

Apple was third in the top five smartphone shipments list, behind Samsung. In the second quarter, the iPhone maker saw a 15.7 percent year-on-year increase in Europe. With an estimated 9.6 million iPhone models shipped, the company amassed a 19.2 percent market share. The iPhone 12 series is believed to have attracted Apple fans in the region who were in desperate need of a replacement for their aging Apple devices.

Oppo and Realme were the two players who remained in the top five. While Oppo's year-on-year growth was 180 percent, Realme's year-on-year growth was 1,800 percent. Both companies, however, were unable to achieve a double-digit market share in Europe.

According to Strategy Analytics, Oppo captured a 5.6 percent market share with 2.8 million smartphone shipments, while Realme shipped 1.9 million units to earn a 3.8 percent market share. Xiaomi achieved a market share of 25.3 percent with 12.7 million smartphone shipments. According to the analytics, Samsung holds a 24.0 percent market share with 12.0 million smartphone shipments, while Apple holds a 25.3 percent market share with 12.7 million smartphone shipments.

Overall, smartphone shipments in Europe fell from 59.1 million to 50.1 million units in the first quarter. Additionally, the decline in shipments reduced year-on-year growth from 24% to 14%, resulting in a negative quarter-on-quarter growth of minus 15%.
