What is CSS3?

CSS3 is the latest version of the W3C CSS - Cascading Style Sheets language and its main purpose is to extend the older CSS2 to offer more functionality. CSS3 also comes with the long-awaited “novel features”, such as rounded corners, shadows, gradients, linear gradients, transitions or animations, as well as new features for layouts like multi-columns, flexbox or the CSS grid layouts.

CSS which is the acronym for Cascading Style Sheets is a style sheet language that is used for describing and designing the presentation of a web document that is written in a mark-up language such as HTML. CSS is one of the three fundamental technology of the World Wide Web, the other two being HTML and JavaScript. 

CSS is developed to bring about the separation of the presentation layer and the content, including the website layout, colors, and fonts. This separation can greatly improve the accessibility of the content, and provide more flexibility and control in the design of the web page CSS lets multiple web pages to share the same formatting by defining the relevant CSS styles in a separate “.css” file and this reduces the complexity and repetition in the structural content of the website.

The separation of the site’s formatting from the content also makes it possible to use the same mark-up page in different styles for different methods or rendering, such as on-screen view, styles for print, by voice, and on other Braille-based tactile devices. CSS also has rules for secondary website formatting if the content is to be viewed on a mobile device. 

The name cascading in CSS comes from the priority scheme that has been specified to find out which style rule applies if more than one rule matches a particular HTML element. This cascading priority scheme is easily predictable.

Before CSS was developed, nearly all the presentational attributes of HTML documents were contained inside the HTML mark-up. All the font styles, colors, styles for background, alignments of elements, borders, and the various sizes have to be explicitly described, mostly repeatedly, inside the HTML document. CSS lets web authors move much of that information to a separate file, which is the style sheet, this results in a simpler, smaller and easy to debug HTML.

1. CSS 3 Selectors: In addition to the previous selectors that were available in CSS2, CSS 3 comes with some new selectors. By using these style selectors, you can choose the DOM elements based on their attributes. 2. CSS 3 Rounded Corners: CSS 3 solves the problem of creating rounded borders by introducing the border-radius style property, which gives developers the same rounded-corner effect and with it, you don't have to write all the code. 

3. CSS 3 Border Image: Another very important feature of CSS 3 is that it allows developers to replace a border with an image. The border-image property allows you to define an image to be displayed instead of a plain solid border With just color.

4. CSS 3 Box Shadow: The box-shadow property of CSS3 allows you to create a drop shadow effect for an element.

5. CSS 3 Text Shadow: The new text-shadow property introduced in CSS3 allows you to add drop shadow effects to the text on a webpage. In older versions of CSS, this would be done by either making use of an image or duplicating a text element and then positioning it over the text.
