What is HTML5?

HTML5 is a web development stack that defines the structure, properties, and characteristics of a web page content by adding a pattern that is mark-up based on it.

HTML5 is the fifth and more recent major release of HTML, and parts of XHTML. The present standard, the HTML Living Standard was developed by WHATWG, which is made up of the most popular vendors of browsers, for example, Google, Apple, Firefox, and Microsoft), with the Living Standard also existing in a version that is abridged.

HTML5 was initially released to the public-facing form on 22 January 2008, with a huge update and "W3C Recommendation" status in October 2014. The goals of HTML5 were to improve the language with full support for the latest multimedia, media’s and other new features; to make sure that the language remains both easily readable by humans and is consistently understood and interpreted by computers and devices such as web browsers, file parsers, etc., without the rigidity of XHTML and to remain compatible with more older software. HTML5 is developed to replace not only HTML 4, but also older version such as XHTML 1 and the DOM Level 2 HTML.

HTML5 comes with a very detailed processing model to further encourage more interoperable implementations of it, HTML5 extends, improves and rationalizes the mark up that is available for web documents, and it introduces application programming interfaces (API) and mark-ups for complex and dynamic web applications. For the same goals, HTML5 is also, a web technology for cross-platform mobile applications, because it is made up of features that are designed with low-powered devices and mobile devices in mind.

The HTML5 Syntax no longer relies on SGML in spite of their mark-up being similar. HTML5 has, however, been developed to be able to work with older versions of HTML. HTML5 comes with a new first code line that looks very much like an SGML document type declaration, <!DOCTYPE html>, which initializes the HTML5 standards-compliant rendering mode.

HTML5, which is the latest web application markup language standard for the World Wide Web, plays a very crucial and important role in modern web design and web application development. In many areas, HTML5 is considered to be the most looked for skill in today’s digital economy. HTML5 is the go-to technology in designing and publishing digital ads and videos that can work over several screens and browsers. For this reason, together with many other reasons, the Interactive Advertising Bureau recently named HTML5 to be the latest standard in interactive marketing, which means that the advertising industry will be migrating from Flash to HTML5 over the next year.

Features of HTML5

There are many features that came with HTML5, below are some of them:

1. New Semantic Elements: HTML5 comes with new semantic mark-up elements such as <header>, <section>, and <footer>.

2. Forms 2.0: HTML 5 comes with major improvements to the normal HTML web forms. New attributes have been introduced for the HTML <input> tag.

3. Persistent Local Storage: HTML5 now lets web developers make use of both local and web storage without depending on third-party plugins.

4. Web Socket: HTML5 comes with Web Socket which is a next-generation multi-directional communication technology for web applications.

5. Server-Sent Events: HTML5 comes with events that flow from a web server to the user's web browsers and they are known as Server-Sent Events (SSE).

6. Canvas: HTML5 canvas provides supports for a two-dimensional drawing surface that you can draw on with JavaScript.

7. Audio and Video: With HTML5, you can now embed audio or video to your webpages/web apps without depending on third-party plugins.

8. Geolocation: With HTML5, visitors to your websites can choose to share their physical location with your web application or not.

9. Microdata: This feature of HTML5 lets you create your own semantic beyond what HTML5 offers you and it allows you to further extend your web pages with custom semantics.

10. Drag and drop: HTML5 allows you to drag and drop items from one location to the other on a webpage.

Advantages of Studying HTML5

The following are some of the advantages why you should learn HTML5:

1. HMTL5 is the only one you need at the party: With HTML5, no plug-ins or 3rd party APIs are needed to make use of most features that in the past would require them, and they function across almost all internet browsers. With fewer limitations and constraints, HTML5 offers and presents itself to a richer internet web browsing experience.

2. Create more interactive, engaging content: HTML5 allows for much easier web updates and changes, which helps to produce more highly engaging and interactive content. By working across several browsers, HTML5 can grow more easily, adjusting to meet up with the needs of developers and inspiring the developer's creativity.

3. Video is king: HTML5 allows you to embedded videos into your web pages, which provides easy access to videos for their users. It supports a very smooth video streaming across all kinds of devices by providing native support for video and audio without any plug-ins.

4. It’s everywhere: Html 5 works on your tablet, phone, laptop, etc. HMTL5 promotes cross-platform compatibility across all devices. And as with HTML5, you can also take the experience offline too.
