What is Video Editing?

Video Editing is the process of joining together video clips, sounds and images to create a professional and meaningful video content.

Video Editing is usually carried out on a computer with several fancy video editing software programs known as Non-Linear Editors, or NLEs which allows you to view, cut, edit and arrange digital video in any order without the need to play through the whole frames.

In the past, movies were edited on film materials, editors had to cut up the film material with a razor blade and attach the pieces end to end to make a complete movie. But today's technology has improved the process of Video Editing.

Video Editing is also referred to as Post-Production.

Stages of Video Editing

Video Editing is basically split into three stages which are:

1. Pre-production,

2. Core-production,

3. Post-production.

Pre-production is the start phase in which the movie script is written and developed, the crew is established here, and the shots are planned.

Core-production completely involves shooting the video.

Post-production is where the video editing, sound editing, special effects, re-fining and final exporting takes place.

Types of Video Editing Software:

Video Editing Softwares are desktop-based applications used to carry out video editing from raw stages to final exporting and publishing.

Some of the Video Editing softwares used by both beginners and professionals include:

Final Cut Pro

Adobe Premiere Pro

iMovie

Filmora

Features of Video Editing

There are many features of video editing, and some of them are:

1. Linear Video Editing:  In this form, the developer makes use of videotape and it is edited in a very linear way. Several video clips that are from different tapes are recorded to one single tape in the order that they will appear.

2. Non-Linear Editing Systems (NLEs) this allows the video to be edited on computers with software that specializes in video editing. This process is not destructive to the raw footage of the video and is done by using programs such as Adobe Premiere Pro, Final Cut Pro etc.

3. Offline Editing is the process by which raw video footage is transferred from an original source, without directly affecting the original film stock or videotape. Once the whole editing is done, the original media is then re-assembled and regrouped in the online editing stage.

4. Online Editing is the process of reassembling the edit to total resolution video online after an offline edit has been carried out. It is done in the final stage of video production for online distribution.

5. Cloud-based Editing is the process of making use of the internet to carry out video editing remotely, collaboratively or of a time-critical nature such as editing of live sports events that are active in real-time by using video proxies (lower-resolution copies) of the original video material.
