CSIRO Welcomes New Chief of Information Security

business .

After a two-year period in which one individual managed both the Chief Information Officer (CIO) and Chief Information Security Officer (CISO) roles, CSIRO has appointed Jamie Rossato as the new CISO. His primary responsibility will be to lead the agency’s cyber security uplift program, a crucial initiative aimed at enhancing CSIRO's cyber security measures. Rossato joined CSIRO in August following nearly three-and-a-half years as the information security director at beverage company Lion, and he will report directly to CIO Brendan Dalton.

Dalton previously oversaw both the CIO and CISO positions from March 2022 until Rossato's appointment, highlighting the complexity and demands of managing these critical roles simultaneously. CSIRO began the recruitment process for the CISO position in May, recognizing the need for dedicated leadership in this area. Rossato's role will encompass the management of CSIRO’s cyber security program, including its integration with overall protective security, crisis leadership, governance, and threat monitoring.

Dalton emphasized the importance of cyber security as a key focus for CSIRO's technology strategy, stating, “We’re making sure that the changes we’re making through our cyber uplift program stick.” He also noted efforts to broaden cyber governance across the agency, particularly in relation to research technology, ensuring that a thorough risk assessment of research technology is conducted. The decision to appoint Rossato reflects an acknowledgment that having one person manage both roles had become impractical, as the cyber uplift program continues to make significant progress.

The previous standalone CISO at CSIRO was Damian Walker, who served from September 2019 to September 2021. One of the agency's significant initiatives in the past year was the onboarding of its new high-performance computer (HPC), named Virga, which was built by Dell. This computer is primarily designed to bolster CSIRO’s AI capabilities while also contributing to the agency’s ongoing digital transformation efforts.

Dalton highlighted that there is a dual focus on improving operational efficiency and governance within the organization. “There’s a focus on doing business more efficiently and the governance of that business,” he explained. He also pointed out the enhancements being made to the staff onboarding process, aiming to make it more efficient and secure, ensuring employees are properly integrated into the IT network. Additionally, ongoing digital efficiency initiatives are being led by Chief Digital Officer Rebecca Ostergaard.

CSIRO is undertaking an extensive review of its entire science portfolio to determine how each department can effectively integrate artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities into their operations. This initiative is a testament to the agency's commitment to advancing its technological and research capabilities. By assessing the potential applications of AI across various disciplines, CSIRO aims to enhance its research outcomes and operational efficiency.

This review process involves analyzing current scientific practices, identifying areas where AI can provide significant value, and developing strategies to implement these technologies effectively. The goal is to leverage AI to improve data analysis, streamline processes, and foster innovation within CSIRO's diverse range of scientific fields.

Through this proactive approach, CSIRO not only aims to stay at the forefront of scientific research but also to ensure that its methodologies and practices evolve in alignment with the rapidly changing technological landscape. By embracing AI, CSIRO is positioning itself to address complex challenges more effectively and contribute to Australia’s scientific and technological advancements.
