Google Widens Passkey Support to Advanced Protection Program Ahead of US Presidential Election

business .

Ahead of the U.S. presidential election, Google is enhancing its Advanced Protection Program (APP) by introducing passkey support. This program is utilized by individuals facing heightened risks of targeted attacks, including campaign workers, candidates, journalists, human rights workers, and others vulnerable to online threats.Traditionally, APP required the use of hardware security keys. However, with the introduction of passkey support, users will now have the option to enroll in APP using passkeys. Users can choose to utilize passkeys alone or in conjunction with a password or hardware security key for added security.

Heather Adkins, Google's VP of Security Engineering, emphasized the importance of this feature, especially during a critical election year. She highlighted Google's collaboration with experts and organizations such as Defending Digital Campaigns, the International Foundation for Electoral Systems, Asia Centre, Internews, and Possible to safeguard high-risk users globally. This move underscores Google's commitment to strengthening security measures for individuals facing targeted online threats, particularly during sensitive periods such as elections.

Google reports that passkeys have been utilized for user authentication over 1 billion times across more than 400 million Google Accounts since the introduction of passkey support in 2022. Notably, passkeys are being used on Google Accounts more frequently than legacy forms of two-step verification, including SMS one-time passwords and app-based one-time passwords, when combined. This significant adoption of passkeys underscores their effectiveness and popularity among users seeking enhanced security measures for their Google Accounts. Passkeys offer a more robust and secure method of authentication, contributing to the overall protection of users' accounts from unauthorized access and potential cyber threats.

Passkey logins provide an additional layer of security, making it more challenging for malicious actors to gain remote access to accounts, as they would require physical access to the user's device. By eliminating the reliance on traditional username and password combinations, which are vulnerable to phishing attacks, passkeys enhance account security and help mitigate the risk of unauthorized access. This technology has gained widespread adoption by numerous other companies, underscoring its effectiveness and reliability. Major tech companies such as Apple, Amazon, X (formerly Twitter), PayPal, WhatsApp, GitHub, and TikTok have all implemented passkey authentication to bolster the security of their platforms and protect user accounts from potential threats.

Google has unveiled plans to broaden its Cross-Account Protection program, which aims to enhance security by sharing notifications of suspicious activity with third-party apps connected to users' Google accounts. This initiative serves to prevent cybercriminals from exploiting one compromised account to infiltrate others. With this expansion, Google intends to fortify the security of 2.4 billion accounts across 3.4 million apps and sites. By fostering collaborations across the industry, Google aims to bolster the collective defense against cyber threats and ensure the safety and integrity of users' accounts and data.Indeed, Google's proactive approach underscores its unwavering commitment to prioritizing user security and safeguarding against potential vulnerabilities and unauthorized access.

By fostering partnerships and sharing security insights with third-party apps, Google is actively working to create a more resilient and secure online ecosystem for all users. This collaborative effort reflects Google's recognition of the interconnected nature of online security and the importance of collective action in mitigating cyber threats. By leveraging its expertise and resources to empower partners and enhance security measures across the digital landscape, Google demonstrates its dedication to fostering a safer online environment for everyone.
