Skynet has the potential to wipe out humanity through the use of deepfalse information

The filmmaker James Cameron believes that critical thinking can make a significant contribution to the fight against the spread of misinformation in today's media.

The BBC recently reported that Cameron has worked at the cutting edge of visual effects, with the goal of creating the most realistic visuals possible for his films. According to Cameron, "as we improve these tools, we're effectively building a toolkit for creating fake media."

Existing tools, such as those made available through mobile applications, are not particularly effective. Cameron, on the other hand, believes that the limitations of these tools will gradually diminish over time. When the speed of the modern news cycle is combined with the speed with which people respond, it is entirely possible for a major incident to occur between the time a deepfake is released and the time it is exposed as a hoax. This is especially true in the case of terrorist attacks.

In Cameron's words, "all Skynet would have to do is deepfake a bunch of people and pit them against one another, incite a lot of foment, and then run this enormous deepfake on humanity."

It all comes down to critical thinking. "Can you tell me how you got that information?" After noting that we have an abundance of search tools at our disposal, Cameron wonders why they aren't being used more often. To determine whether or not a source is credible, you must first understand the source, then conduct an investigation into that source.

As well, Cameron warns against falling prey to "ridiculous, conspiracy-mongering paranoia."

After concluding the interview, Cameron says, "I could be a projection of an artificial intelligence right now," which raises questions about how genuine the interview is.
