This Supersonic Jet Company Aims To Fly Anywhere In The World In Just 4 Hours, For Just $100

They have unveiled a supersonic plane that is three times faster than commonly used commercial aircraft.

It would be a cheap and quick flight to anywhere in the world, with the goal of covering any distance in four hours or less for a fraction of the $100 price.

Boom Supersonic resurrects the supersonic dream that died nearly two decades ago with Concorde's retirement, which seemed like an absurd fantasy at the time.

Blake Scholl, the founder of the company developing the supersonic jet, hopes to have the aircraft flying by 2026. It was the first of a new batch of companies vying to bring supersonic jets back to life to roll out an actual demonstrator aircraft, the XB1.

“We are either going to fail or we are going to change the world,” Scholl told CNN via video call from Denver, Colorado.

No Significant Change for Commercial Aviation Since Jet Age

Commercial aviation as we know it today has not evolved significantly from the technology introduced during the Jet Age of the 1950s and 1960s, and the developers of the Boom Supersonic intend to change that.

“That chasm of time is what separates us. We believe it is far more critical to break the time barrier than it is to break the sound barrier.” Along with the aircraft's Mach 2, Overture will focus on over 500 primarily transoceanic routes. Two speeds equals twice the speed of today's subsonic commercial jets.

Scholl believes that breaking the time barrier could be life-changing. “It alters where we can vacation, alters where we can conduct business, alters what we can fall in love with or be near.”

The development and flight of the Boom Supersonic contribute to environmental sustainability by reducing carbon emissions and having a greater impact on sustaining the environment if commercial flights are revolutionized by technology. “We see ourselves as continuing where Concorde left off and addressing the critical issues of economic and environmental sustainability,” Scholl explains.

Scholl believes that the Boom Supersonic flights will be a success if they are affordable, and thus intends to price them similarly to business class tickets. In comparison to the Concorde, which cost $20,000 in today's world.

“That is not traveling; that is more of a once-in-a-lifetime experience,” Scholl explains, before adding, “Versus what we want to do, which is anywhere in the world in four hours for $100.”
