The future of data centres in the Middle East: An interview with AWS VP

Kevin Miller is the Vice President for Global Data Centres at AWS, overseeing a team responsible for the design, engineering, and operations of data centre facilities.

During his 17-year tenure at AWS, Miller has been instrumental in delivering several key services. Notably, he was involved in the development and launch of AWS's VPN service, DirectConnect. Additionally, he has held the role of General Manager for Amazon S3, one of AWS's foundational storage services. His extensive experience and leadership have significantly contributed to the growth and innovation of AWS's infrastructure and service offerings.

We continue to see very strong demand for AWS services, both for our established offerings and our new Generative AI services. A core principle of AWS is to deliver capacity swiftly, ensuring that customers don't need to worry about provisioning, forecasting, or enduring a weeks-long waiting period to request additional capacity. This agility allows businesses to scale seamlessly and respond to their evolving needs without the traditional constraints associated with infrastructure management.

As a technology, Generative AI is poised to revolutionize the way applications are developed and utilized. I believe this advancement is comparable in significance to the emergence of cloud computing or the invention of transistors. Generative AI represents a fundamental shift in computing capabilities by imbuing applications with human-like reasoning abilities, a feature that holds immense value for businesses across various industries.

Over the past 18-24 months, we have witnessed a growing number of organizations embracing Generative AI and leveraging its capabilities to drive innovation and improve their operations. This trend underscores the increasing recognition of Generative AI's potential to revolutionize business processes and drive competitive advantage in the digital era.

Since establishing a presence in Bahrain in 2019, we have expanded our footprint to include two regions, with plans for further expansion in the near future.
