U.S. Commits to Supporting Africa’s AI Objectives

The two-day pan-African AI conference, co-hosted by the United States, concluded on Wednesday in Lagos, Nigeria's vibrant commercial epicenter. The event brought together an impressive assembly of delegates, including high-profile public officials, technology leaders, policymakers, academics, and entrepreneurs, all converging to address the advancement and deployment of artificial intelligence (AI) within Africa.

U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Kurt Campbell delivered a prominent keynote address, underscoring the profound impact of the global technology revolution. "A global technology revolution is well under way," Campbell remarked. "The race to develop and deploy new technologies, including artificial intelligence, is shaping every aspect of our lives.

Our objective is to create a robust network of collaboration between U.S. and African AI researchers, policymakers, and industry leaders. By fostering these partnerships, we aim to drive significant innovation and address shared challenges that impact both continents. This strategic collaboration is designed to facilitate the exchange of knowledge, resources, and best practices, ensuring that the benefits of AI are not limited by geographic or economic boundaries.

Our vision is to enable the global community to harness AI's full potential, making cutting-edge technologies and solutions accessible and beneficial to diverse populations worldwide. Through this initiative, we seek to promote equitable growth and development, leveraging AI to tackle pressing global issues such as health, education, and climate change, while also ensuring that advancements are inclusive and serve the broader good of humanity.

Campbell outlined the vast potential of AI to address pressing global issues such as health care, food security, education, energy, and climate change. He emphasized the importance of African input in the global AI narrative and the necessity for Africa to develop its human capital, enhance research and innovation ecosystems, and establish a robust institutional and regulatory framework. "Africa's growing significance in the global technology landscape is undeniable," he continued. "The African Union's landmark AI strategy offers a clear roadmap for leveraging AI to achieve developmental goals across education, health, agriculture, infrastructure, peace and security, and governance."

In a notable development during the conference, Nigeria's Minister of Communication, Innovation, and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani, announced a $61,000 grant to support the country’s most innovative AI startups. Tijani highlighted the importance of a collaborative and intentional approach to harnessing AI’s potential. "To truly maximize AI for our collective benefit, we must adopt a deliberate and cooperative strategy," he said. "Our digital transformation journey must be inclusive, equitable, and centered around human needs."

Currently, Africa accounts for only 2.5% of the global AI market, according to Artificial Intelligence for Development Africa (AI4D). Nevertheless, analysts project that with increased focus on responsible AI use, the continent's AI sector could significantly boost Africa’s economy, potentially adding $2.9 trillion by 2030. Kenya, South Africa, and Nigeria are expected to be at the forefront of this growth.

The conference offered a crucial opportunity for African voices to shape the future direction of global AI systems, emphasizing the continent's growing role in the international technology arena. It highlighted the urgent need for continued investment and cooperative efforts to unlock AI’s transformative potential for Africa's development.
