Aqara Motion and Light Sensor P2 Review: A Cost-Effective Alternative to the Eve Motion Sensor with Thread Compatibility

The Aqara Motion and Light Sensor P2 represents the evolution towards unified smart home connectivity with its native Matter support. By ensuring compatibility across diverse ecosystems and platforms, this feature streamlines the setup process for users. Now, users only require a Matter app, a Matter-compatible Thread Border Router, and a Matter Controller to seamlessly integrate the P2 sensor into their smart home network. This simplified setup enhances user experience and accessibility, eliminating the need for complex configurations and technical expertise.

Equipped with a built-in light sensor, the P2 can autonomously adjust lighting conditions based on the surrounding illumination levels, offering convenience and energy efficiency throughout the day. Its wide detection angle of 170° and extended range of up to 7 meters (which can be extended to 10 meters with Aqara Home) make it ideal for precise motion detection in targeted areas. Additionally, the sensor features a 360-degree adjustable stand, allowing for flexible installation on walls, ceilings, or horizontal surfaces.

In addition to its primary function of motion detection, the P2 sensor boasts advanced security and automation capabilities. It can promptly send alerts through the app or speaker upon detecting any unusual activity, enhancing overall security measures. Furthermore, its seamless integration with other smart devices allows users to establish a robust and interconnected security system tailored to their specific needs and preferences.Furthermore, the utilization of a CR2450 Lithium battery not only ensures long-lasting power but also contributes to the sensor’s eco-friendliness by reducing the frequency of battery disposal and replacement. This aligns with Aqara’s commitment to sustainability and environmental responsibility.

By integrating the P2 with the Aqara Home app and Hub M3, users gain access to exclusive features such as custom detection settings, motion indication, and local alert systems. With this expanded functionality, users gain greater control over their smart home setup, allowing them to fine-tune settings and security measures according to their unique needs.

Indeed, the level of customization offered by the P2 sensor not only enhances convenience but also instills a greater sense of confidence in the reliability and effectiveness of the entire smart home system. With the ability to fine-tune detection settings, sensitivity, and automation rules, users can tailor the sensor’s behavior to suit their specific needs and preferences. This personalized approach ensures that the smart home operates exactly as desired, providing peace of mind and a seamless user experience.Configuring the P2 to integrate seamlessly with Home Assistant, much like other Matter-based devices, proved to be a bit challenging due to compatibility issues and connectivity hurdles.

Aqara initially suggested that the connectivity issue may stem from its use of Bluetooth for the onboarding process. However, upon further investigation, it became evident that the problem persisted primarily with Home Assistant and SkyConnect setups, rather than with Aqara devices or other Matter-enabled devices. Interestingly, connectivity appeared to be more stable with Google Nest WiFi Pro, indicating that the root cause of the issue lies within the SkyConnect system rather than the Aqara devices themselves.

Upon successful integration with Home Assistant, the sensor performed reliably, delivering the expected illuminance and occupancy data, while also providing useful insights into battery life through diagnostics.
