Founded in 2015, Aloha Browser has been a staunch advocate for digital freedom and privacy, striving to make these principles accessible through its privacy-focused web browser and Private AI Assistant. The company's latest initiative addresses a significant pain point for internet users and privacy advocates alike: the incessant and often frustrating cookie consent prompts that have become a standard feature of web browsing.

The current landscape of cookie consent is marred by inefficiency and user frustration. Despite the intention behind regulations such as the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), which mandate that users must be given control over their data through cookie consent banners, the reality is that these banners frequently lead to an overload of consent requests. Many users either ignore these banners or accept all cookies out of convenience, which paradoxically increases data collection rather than mitigating it. Aloha Browser's research highlights that nearly 70% of consumers either close or disregard cookie banners altogether, thus undermining the privacy protections that these banners are designed to enforce.

In practical terms, Aloha estimates that the average internet user spends approximately 32 hours each year dealing with cookie pop-ups. This figure scales to an astonishing 760 lifetimes of wasted time each day when considered on a global scale. To bypass these incessant prompts, many users turn to ad-blockers, which can prevent the display of cookie banners but may still leave users vulnerable to unwanted data collection.

To address these issues, Aloha Browser is advocating for a significant shift in how cookie consent is managed. The company's proposal, detailed in an open letter to the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C), suggests moving cookie consent management from the individual website level to the browser level. This approach, which Aloha terms a “one-and-done” solution, involves allowing users to set their cookie preferences once within their browser settings. These preferences would then be automatically applied across all websites visited, thus eliminating the need for repeated cookie consent requests on each site.

This proposal not only aims to streamline the user experience by reducing the frequency of cookie pop-ups but also seeks to enhance the effectiveness of privacy management. By allowing users to configure their consent preferences globally, Aloha's approach provides a more consistent and user-friendly way to manage privacy settings. The technical details of this solution have been made available through an open-source repository on GitHub, reflecting Aloha's commitment to transparency and collaboration within the industry.

The new feature is expected to be rolled out in Aloha Browser in the coming weeks. It will offer users a range of global consent options, including the ability to accept all cookies, reject all cookies, create custom settings for different categories of cookies, or set preferences for specific websites. The browser will securely store these consent preferences and provide a standardized application programming interface (API) for websites to query users' consent status. This standardized approach is intended to simplify the consent process while ensuring compliance with privacy regulations.
