Common Punctuation Mistake In Essay Writing

online education,Writing .

Concluding with the clichés, "The End" or "Fin." is not an error, but it's often seen as unimaginative. Writing good essays isn't only about having enough content; the presentation is important too. This is why it's crucial to use proper punctuation at the end of our essay, so it will be easier to read by others. The same applies when our essay ends abruptly in the middle of a sentence or paragraph - potential readers will be unimpressed.

The following are examples of common punctuation mistakes in essays:

1) Ending with a question mark

One reason for using this symbol is if you want your readers to think about an idea or have them wonder about what you're trying to say. It can be helpful if an individual reader can't decide, like when there's more than one answer (e.g., Should I watch TV or read?). However, this doesn't suit any of the sentences in our essay - we want to give answers, not leave them unanswered.

2) Ending with an exclamation mark

What's wrong with using this symbol? If our essay is well written, it will surely make sense, no matter how we end it. However, there are some cases when this isn't appropriate. For example: if you're describing an essential moment in time (e.g., this is the day I've been waiting for all my life!) or you're talking about something very new (e.g., I just got a car - mind-blowing!).

3) Ending with ellipses

The most common question about ending your essay with an ellipsis is whether it's okay to use them. The answer is yes, but only when you want to indicate an unfinished sentence. If this is your intention, make sure the ellipsis doesn't appear at the beginning of a paragraph or in the middle of one - it should be at the end.

4) Ending with quotation marks

Using quotation marks might seem okay at first glance, but if they are not part of the original sentence, they are incorrect. Let's take, for example, the following sentence: "I'm hungry." Ending this with quotes makes it look like you want to copy it exactly as your source said.

5) Ending with an opening quotation mark

If you end a sentence with an opening quotation mark, there's no way to know if you've finished your thought or you're quoting someone. This makes it very confusing for your readers, who'll probably choose to skip the rest and continue reading elsewhere.

6) Ending with a closing quotation mark

This is not an error everyone makes, but it's still worth mentioning since we often see sentences that end with a closing quotation mark. As always, this symbol should only appear at the end of a sentence that's already been finished by someone else - this way, we can distinguish between the two.

7) Ending without a punctuation mark

If you want to be taken seriously as a writer, then ending your essay with nothing is worse than all the mentioned mistakes. A reasonable conclusion is a must, no matter the length of your essay - this is what our readers will remember better than anything else. The bottom line for all these points is simple: pay attention to punctuation! It's not something you can ignore if you want people to take your work seriously. Punctuation marks have been around for a reason: they're an essential part of every language. If your essay is as perfect as possible, stick with the rules and leave nothing to chance. In the end, it will be worth it because you'll have a solid piece of work that's easy to read by others -congratulations!
