Telstra Customers’ Details Compromised in Leaked Data File

business .

The leaked data file, which was published on a hacking forum, affected approximately 3000 Telstra customers who use OptiComm-based broadband services.

The data breach exposed personal information, including names, email addresses, and phone numbers, of approximately 3000 Telstra customers. This breach occurred as a result of a data file being published to a hacking forum. OptiComm, a company owned by Uniti, is responsible for building fiber networks primarily in new housing estates. Telstra, along with other retail service providers (RSPs), resells OptiComm-based services to customers.

Telstra is actively engaged in a cooperative effort with OptiComm to delve into the root cause of the data breach and to promptly inform relevant regulatory bodies. As per claims made by a user on a hacking forum, the leaked data file allegedly emanated from OptiComm’s orders database, encompassing approximately 47,281 rows of records. However, it’s essential to highlight that a substantial portion of the data file appears to be comprised of fictitious or dummy information.⬤

OptiComm emphasized that the leaked data file did not stem from a breach of its operational or business systems. The information contained in the file specifically pertains to the retail service provider (RSP) and pertains to services acquired by the RSP from OptiComm. OptiComm assured that it is collaborating with Telstra to thoroughly investigate the breach and take appropriate measures. The company promptly addressed the situation after discovering the leak, prioritizing transparency and proactive engagement to address any potential concerns.

iTnews took the initiative to contact 12 of OptiComm’s major retail service providers to inquire about the potential impact of the data leak on their users. Among those contacted, Superloop, Exetel, Pentanet, and Origin have confirmed that none of their customers were affected by the breach. This proactive outreach by these service providers underscores their dedication to safeguarding the security and privacy of their users’ information, reassuring their customers of their commitment to data protection.

Telstra has emphasized that its primary focus at this time is to promptly inform the impacted customers about the data breach and offer them relevant security guidance to help mitigate any potential risks associated with the incident. This proactive approach underscores Telstra’s commitment to addressing the situation swiftly and ensuring the well-being of its affected customers.Telstra is actively reaching out to all affected customers and has extended support services through IDCare, Australia’s national identity and cybersecurity community support service. This initiative aims to provide affected individuals with comprehensive assistance and guidance to address any concerns or challenges stemming from the data breach, further demonstrating Telstra’s commitment to customer welfare and cybersecurity.

OptiComm, a prominent fiber network operator in Australia, was acquired by Uniti for $532 million in June 2020. Following this acquisition, Uniti further expanded its network infrastructure by purchasing Telstra’s FTTP network Velocity for $140 million in December of the same year. These strategic acquisitions have positioned Uniti as a key player in Australia’s telecommunications landscape, enabling it to enhance its network capabilities and compete effectively with the National Broadband Network (NBN).

In 2022, Uniti Group was delisted from the ASX following its acquisition by a consortium of digital infrastructure investors led by Morrison & Co. This acquisition marked a significant development in Uniti’s journey, as it transitioned from a publicly listed company to being privately owned by a consortium focused on digital infrastructure investments.
