Basic Principles of Graphic Design

Graphic Design,Graphic Design Principles .

Graphic design is the art and technique of planning and presenting the structure and content of images, symbols and words to create an impact or convey information. It’s responsible for communication across a variety of platforms and formats, from print and digital publications to mobile applications and signage. Graphic design is a broad discipline that covers everything from logo design to web design and branding.

Maybe you volunteered to design invitations for a family event. Or you got into entrepreneurship and now you yourself deal with marketing materials for your young business. In any case, you need to create a design with a background eraser tool online. And if you are new to this field, then, most likely, your first attempts were not very successful. Maybe you think you reached the peak of your artistic career at the age of 5 when your mother put your drawing on the fridge. But, hey, young people, don't rush to break the computer against the wall in a fit of creative crisis!

Here are some professional tips for graphic design: with their help you can complete the task and start thinking like a designer. If you want, you can immediately apply the knowledge while practicing: open a blank canvas in a graphic editing program or find a suitable template and start working with it.

Hierarchy in graphic design!

The importance of the hierarchy is in directing our view on the page. Thanks to this, it is easier for our brain to process information. If all the elements of the design have the same visual weight, the hierarchy will not work and it will be difficult for the viewer to determine what is important and what is secondary. It's like being in a room with a bunch of people talking at the same time and in roughly the same tone - one of them has to speak louder to be heard. There are several ways to control the visual weight:

  • size
  • Color
  • space
  • kibbutz

The best option is when there is one dominant element in the design. But there may be two (for example, a large headline and a call-to-action button). The main thing is that the content of the composition be balanced. Usually the most important part of the message is the dominant element. This idea applies to all the visual elements as well as the texts.

Awareness of space from the graphic design distinguishes two types of space: positive and negative (or white). Positive space is the space occupied by the elements themselves, and negative space is free space around the positive. When the two spaces are in harmony, the design looks balanced, sophisticated and orderly. Negative space can also be used to create super cool visual illusions. How can we understand that we found the optimal ratio between the positive and negative space? The difficulty is that there are no clear rules. As one of our professional designers says: "In the end, it's not all about the amount of negative space. It all comes down to balancing the elements and erasing the unnecessary."
