Collaborative Talks: Hormuud Telecom Engages in Discussions with Somali Security Agencies
Hormuud Telecom and Somali security agencies have engaged in discussions to address contentious issues related to data privacy, leading to the closure of the company's main headquarters. The meeting, which sought to resolve the standoff and foster cooperation within the framework of the country's laws, occurred following the detention of three management members from Hormuud Telecom by the National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA). The detention occurred after the telecom company declined to furnish financial activity information about its customers.
Multiple sources revealed that the closed-door meeting resulted in a breakthrough, with both parties indicating their readiness for comprehensive and genuine collaboration. Reports suggest that the Somali government retracted a previous statement from NISA that accused Hormuud Telecom of violating laws pertaining to national security and anti-terrorism measures.
In accordance with the constitution, the Somali government prioritizes the protection of national security, the well-being of citizens, and the safeguarding of their property under national law. Hormuud Telecom Somalia Inc. is a privately held telecommunications service provider headquartered in Mogadishu, Somalia. It holds the distinction of being the largest private-sector employer in the country and the first privately-owned enterprise in Somalia to receive international ISO certification.
