Eswatini Adopts Nuclear Technology to Enhance Agriculture, Health Care, and Energy

Eswatini has recently unveiled a pioneering initiative aimed at driving sustainable development through the application of nuclear technology, focusing on sectors such as agriculture, healthcare, and energy planning. This initiative, called the Country Program Framework (CPF), was officially launched two weeks ago by Prince Lonkhokhela, the Eswatini Minister of Natural Resources and Energy. The CPF represents a strategic effort to harness nuclear technology to address critical national needs in energy security, food security, and human health. This initiative is closely aligned with Eswatini's National Development Plan and the United Nations Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework, showcasing the country's commitment to integrating advanced technology into its growth strategies.

The development of the CPF has been supported by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), which provides expertise and guidance to ensure the successful implementation of nuclear technology in Eswatini. Bongekile Matsenjwa, a chemical engineer and engineering manager at the Eswatini National Petroleum Company, has expressed strong support for the partnership with the IAEA. Matsenjwa believes that this collaboration will enable Eswatini to make informed decisions about its energy future. He highlights that clean, affordable, and reliable energy is essential for sustainable development, and the CPF will provide valuable insights into energy planning and supply, helping Eswatini navigate its energy needs independently.

Sonia Paiva, a sustainable agriculture expert who advocates for nuclear technology and participated as a panelist at the COP28 U.N. Climate Change Conference, views Eswatini's focus on nuclear technology as timely and crucial. She points out that the country is moving from policy development to practical implementation, which is essential for tackling global challenges related to climate change and sustainability. Paiva emphasizes that Eswatini's initiative comes at a critical moment when the world is seeking innovative solutions to enhance environmental and developmental outcomes.

In the healthcare sector, Dr. Mduduzi Mbuyisa, a medical doctor, highlights the significant potential of nuclear technology to transform Eswatini's healthcare system. He explains that nuclear medicine could greatly enhance diagnostic capabilities through advanced imaging techniques such as Positron Emission Tomography (PET) and Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography (SPECT). These technologies offer more precise and detailed imaging, improving patient care and enabling the development of new skills and career opportunities in the healthcare field.

Eswatini's foray into nuclear technology is part of a broader trend across African countries exploring the benefits of nuclear energy. As energy demands rise and climate change concerns become more pressing, nuclear power is increasingly seen as a viable solution.
