How is endodontics done?

How is endodontics done?

  1. Taking radiographs: The digital periapical radiography is evaluated to establish the origin, extension, and severity of the pulpal lesion.
  2. Cameral opening: After placing local anesthesia, the tooth is opened and all the pulp tissue is removed and each canal is disinfected.
  3. Instrumentation: Then we proceed to mechanically shape the internal walls of the tooth and millimeter measurements are taken.
  4. Obturation of ducts: By already having the exact measurements, we proceed to fill each dental duct with a compatible material – medicated gutta-percha-.
  5. Radiographic control: The final X-ray is taken to verify that everything is fine and that the sealing is perfect in all the walls and ducts. He is medicated with painkillers and antibiotics.

Pain after root channel

The pain after root canal treatment is almost normal, and will disappear as the small wound (typical of the procedure) heals over the course of days -in approximately a week-.

If the discomfort persists for more than a week, a re-evaluation by the endodontist is essential.

How many appointments are necessary?

The total endodontic treatment can be performed in a single session, with the duration of the appointment from 30 to 90 minutes approximately; however, when the dental organ is infected, treatment may require 2, or even 3 appointments.

After treatment, it is likely that an evaluation appointment will be required to verify that everything is ok.

The endodontist performs the root canal treatment in a single session, but in cases where the infection is present, the complete treatment may require 2 to 3 appointments. How Much Is A Root Canal Without Insurance?

OPTIONS to endodontics

There are three alternatives:

re-endodontics

It is performed when a root canal is not correctly sealed and requires retreatment in order to optimally seal and clean the affected tooth.

It may happen that after root canal treatment pain or dental sensitivity still persists, these symptoms could indicate the need for endodontic retreatment.

Apicoectomy:

When it is not possible to re-endodontic, the root tip is broken or there is a persistent infection; A small opening is made - in the gum and bone - and part of the affected root is cut. The infected tissue is then removed, internally medicated, and sutured.

Extraction:

It is our last option as there is NO other alternative due to excessive dental mobility and loss of bone support; however, in this same act, a dental implant can be placed. For this option, the absence of some type of previous infection is essential.

Root canal treatment is necessary because in this way infection is prevented from invading the bone and dental extraction is inevitable.

What is an endodontist?

An endodontist is a dentist specializing in the diagnosis and treatment of dentin-pulp pathology. Once the dentist has completed his training, he has to complete two years of specialty at an accredited university.

At Solución Dental we have the best endodontists in Lima, with postgraduate studies abroad and with all the specialized instruments and equipment so that your treatment lasts for many years.

Why is it necessary to remove dental pulp?

When the nerve tissue or pulp of a tooth is damaged, it breaks down and bacteria begin to multiply within the pulp chamber. Bacteria and other decayed debris can cause an abscessed tooth.

Is it necessary then more visits?

After the treatment, a periapical radiograph will be performed to verify that the endodontics is correctly performed. A follow-up should be carried out for a few weeks or months depending on the case.

Does endodontics weaken teeth?

Although when the integrity of the dental pulp is removed, the teeth lose hydration and nutrition, at the end of the root canal treatment it is recommended to reinforce it with fiberglass posts or cast metal posts.

How long does a tooth with root canal treatment last?

If the treatment is well carried out, the treated piece can function for many years; however, the semi-annual check-ups and the annual radiographic control must be kept in mind. Remember that root canalized teeth are also susceptible to decay.

Can the treatment be done by a general dentist?

Some cases are relatively straightforward and can be done by a comprehensive dentist; however, for the treatment of root canals in teeth, pieces with infection, or teeth that require subsequent reconstruction, it will ALWAYS be better to treat it with an endodontic specialist.
