Improved internet connectivity has been reported in South Africa, marking a positive development for the country’s digital infrastructure.

The Minister of Communications and Digital Technologies, Mondli Gungubele, highlighted significant improvements in internet connectivity and penetration in South Africa. According to the Minister, internet connectivity has increased from 21.1% in 2011 to 79% in 2022, indicating substantial progress in bridging the digital divide and empowering citizens in an increasingly digital world.

The improvements are attributed to the SA Connect broadband connectivity project, which aims to provide Wi-Fi access to communities and ensure universal internet access. Phase 2 of the project, launched last year, focuses on providing core and access network infrastructure to enable broadband connectivity to community Wi-Fi hotspots, ultimately connecting households.

The government's goal is to enable 5.5 million households with Wi-Fi hotspots in the next three to four years, with targets of 1.5 million households by December 2024 and 747,000 households by the end of the current financial year. Progress has already been made, with 361,000 households enabled by 2,502 Wi-Fi hotspots achieved to date.

The initiative involves collaboration with 76 internet service providers, mainly small and medium-sized enterprises (SMMEs), creating 4,500 direct jobs and numerous indirect job opportunities.

Additionally, the freeing up of spectrum above 700MHz for mobile operators will facilitate the deployment of 4G and 5G technology throughout the country, enabling affordable high-speed internet access for all. The government aims to connect public institutions, including schools, health centers, and libraries, to the internet, with over 21,878 such institutions targeted for connection in the next three years.

The approval of the Next Generation Spectrum Policy by Cabinet marks a significant step towards supporting equitable access to digital connectivity and promoting inclusivity in South Africa. This policy aims to address gaps identified in previous policies and legislation related to spectrum allocation and licensing, with a focus on ensuring digital connectivity even in remote areas.

By promoting equity and fair allocation of spectrum, the policy seeks to bridge the digital divide and provide opportunities for all citizens to access modern digital technologies. This includes industries beyond telecommunications, such as broadcasting, research and development, and community access.

The government's efforts in expanding internet connectivity and digital infrastructure are essential for fostering economic development, enhancing social inclusion, and enabling citizens to participate fully in the global digital community. Without addressing digital disparities, there could be significant social and economic consequences, including widening inequalities and limiting opportunities for growth and development.
