Meta Glasses Top the Charts as Ray-Ban’s Best-Selling Product

business .

EssilorLuxottica's Q3 2024 earnings call shed light on the growing momentum behind Ray-Ban Meta glasses, a product born from the collaboration between the iconic eyewear brand and Meta. CFO Stefano Grassi expressed great satisfaction with the product's performance, especially in the Europe, Middle East, and Africa (EMEA) region, where these smart glasses have become the best-selling product in 60% of Ray-Ban stores. This is a significant achievement, particularly considering that Ray-Ban Meta glasses start at $300, a much higher price point than the brand's usual range of $150 to $200.

The early success of the Ray-Ban Meta glasses signals that consumers are increasingly willing to pay more for stylish, functional smart eyewear. Despite their relatively simple capabilities, the product’s appeal seems to stem from its fashion-forward design and accessibility in physical retail stores, allowing consumers to try them on before purchasing.

The glasses themselves, however, are still in a nascent stage when it comes to technological innovation. Unlike more advanced smart glasses, Ray-Ban Meta glasses do not have integrated displays or sophisticated augmented reality (AR) capabilities. EssilorLuxottica reportedly decided against including a display in this generation of the product due to concerns about the bulkiness such a feature would add. As a result, the current iteration of the glasses focuses more on foundational smart functions, such as voice commands and content sharing, rather than true AR experiences.

Meta has been proactive in enhancing the software side of the glasses. The company has introduced new features, such as the ability to set reminders and timers, send voice messages via WhatsApp, and scan QR codes. Additionally, Meta’s AI assistant has been integrated more naturally into the glasses, allowing for smoother interactions. Later in 2024, Meta plans to roll out more features, including live translation and Spotify controls, further expanding the glasses' utility for everyday use.

The partnership between Meta and EssilorLuxottica, which has now been extended into the 2030s, is a clear indication that both companies are in this for the long haul. Their collaboration aims to develop “multi-generational smart eyewear products,” suggesting that the Ray-Ban Meta glasses are just the first step in a longer journey toward more advanced smart glasses technology. The companies envision future generations of the product, likely with more sophisticated features like AR displays, as the technology becomes more compact and user-friendly.

However, the development of fully functional AR glasses is still a significant challenge. While Ray-Ban Meta glasses are paving the way for the adoption of smart eyewear, truly immersive AR experiences may still be decades away. The current limitations in battery life, processing power, and display technology mean that creating lightweight, stylish, and fully-featured AR glasses is no easy feat.

Meta and EssilorLuxottica’s commitment to the long-term evolution of smart glasses is important, especially given the competition they face. Companies like Samsung and Google are reportedly working on their own smart eyewear solutions, while Apple is expected to enter the market in 2027. As these tech giants ramp up their efforts, the smart glasses space is likely to see rapid advancements over the coming years, with major players vying to deliver the first mainstream AR glasses that strike the right balance between fashion, functionality, and user experience.

For now, Ray-Ban Meta glasses serve as a bridge between the present and the future of wearable tech. They cater to a growing market of consumers who are intrigued by the idea of smart eyewear but aren’t necessarily looking for the full-blown AR experience just yet. As Meta continues to iterate on the software and EssilorLuxottica refines the design, this product is set to evolve further, bringing us one step closer to a world where AR glasses could become as ubiquitous as smartphones.
