Namibia’s Farming Sector Embraces Technological Evolution

The Ministry of Agriculture has intensified its efforts to promote the adoption of technology in agriculture nationwide, aiming to revolutionize farming practices amidst the challenges posed by climate change. These initiatives are designed not only to enhance resilience and sustainability in the agriculture sector but also to increase productivity.According to Jona Musheko, the Public Relations Officer at the Ministry of Agriculture, Water, and Land Reform, significant investments have been made in advanced agricultural technologies and equipment within the framework of programs such as the Cereal Value Chain Development Programme and the Dry Land Crop Production Programme.

These investments underscore the ministry's commitment to leveraging cutting-edge tools and techniques to drive progress and innovation in the agricultural landscape.Farmers have access to a range of equipment, including tractors, walking tractors, drip irrigation systems, and poultry equipment, among others, thanks to subsidies on inputs and mechanized services."These interventions enable timely plowing, effective harvesting, and improved animal management, ultimately leading to increased food output and higher profitability for farmers," stated Musheko.

Furthermore, the Ministry of Agriculture regularly engages in research projects with the Directorate of Agricultural Research and Development to develop livestock and agricultural varieties suited to local conditions. Collaborations with universities and technology firms facilitate the integration of state-of-the-art technologies into farming practices, resulting in enhanced production. Musheko emphasized that recognizing the digital gap prevalent in rural areas, the ministry has implemented communication strategies to disseminate knowledge about agricultural technologies widely.

Utilizing traditional media platforms such as radios and establishing agricultural development centers (ADC) in every community, the agriculture ministry endeavors to reach farmers residing in remote locations, bridging the digital disparity and promoting the adoption of technology among a diverse demographic.In a bid to reduce dependence on fossil fuels and promote environmental sustainability, the ministry has initiated efforts to encourage agricultural activities to transition to renewable energy sources.

The ministry's integration of solar energy into green initiatives demonstrates its commitment to embracing sustainable energy sources and reducing the carbon footprint of agricultural activities.Musheko emphasized that at both regional and national levels, there is rigorous implementation of mechanisms for monitoring and evaluating the impact of technology adoption on farmer livelihoods, food security, and environmental sustainability.

Benjamin Kondjeni, a 29-year-old farmer, experienced an unexpected relocation from Okalongo in the Omusati district to the 3,840-hectare farm Patton in the Kunene region in 2021. This move differed significantly from his initial expectations."I brought a herd of small and large livestock. I have since diversified to include horticulture and charcoal production sold to local factories to meet local energy sector demands," he explained.Benjamin Kondjeni, a forward-thinking 29-year-old farmer, has embraced the benefits of cutting-edge agricultural technology in his farming practices. Utilizing drones, he conducts aerial surveys of his farm, providing him with valuable insights into crop health, soil conditions, and potential areas of improvement.

Moreover, he employs drones to efficiently locate lost animals, significantly reducing the time and effort traditionally required for such tasks.In addition to integrating drone technology, Kondjeni has diversified his farming activities beyond traditional livestock rearing. He has ventured into horticulture, cultivating various crops alongside his livestock operations. Furthermore, he has tapped into the demand for renewable energy by engaging in charcoal production, supplying local factories to meet the energy sector's needs.

Reflecting on the evolving agricultural landscape, Kondjeni acknowledges the challenges associated with embracing change. However, he emphasizes the necessity for farmers to adapt and embrace technological advancements to remain competitive and sustainable in the modern agricultural industry. By staying informed and embracing innovation, Kondjeni exemplifies the proactive approach required to thrive in agriculture's dynamic environment.
