New Times Journalists Triumph in Rwanda’s Inaugural AI Journalist Challenge

The New Times reporters Patrick Nzabonimpa and Heritier Bahizi have made history by clinching the top two spots in the Artificial Intelligence (AI) Journalist Challenge. Nzabonimpa was honored as the winner of the Best AI Story category, while Bahizi secured the first runner-up position in this inaugural competition focused on AI journalism.In recognition of their outstanding achievements, Nzabonimpa received a prize of Rwf 1.5 million, while Bahizi was awarded Rwf 1 million. The AI Journalist Challenge was preceded by a comprehensive four-day workshop conducted in February, aimed at equipping and enhancing the skills of 14 local journalists in Rwanda. During the workshop, participants received training on the fundamentals, ethics, and best practices of AI and technology reporting, empowering them to effectively cover and analyze complex topics in this rapidly evolving field.In addition to the notable achievements of The New Times reporters, the awarding ceremony celebrated the contributions of other talented journalists in Rwanda. Francine Andrew Saro, representing fezaa.com, was recognized as the second runner-up in the challenge, demonstrating her proficiency in AI journalism and storytelling.

As part of the AI Journalist Challenge, journalists were tasked with submitting entries covering a wide range of AI topics relevant to Rwandan society. These entries were intended for dissemination across various media channels, including news media, community radios, and social media platforms. To guide their reporting efforts, journalists received support from UNESCO's Handbook on Reporting on Artificial Intelligence, a valuable resource published under the International Programme for the Development of Communication (IPDC).

The IPDC serves as a crucial platform within the UN system, mobilizing the international community to promote media development and foster a conducive environment for the growth of free and pluralistic press. By providing guidance and resources to journalists, the IPDC aims to enhance the quality of AI reporting and facilitate informed public discourse on emerging technologies.An expert jury composed of seasoned professionals was responsible for evaluating the submitted stories. Entries were assessed based on criteria such as accuracy, depth, clarity, and their potential to raise awareness about AI in Rwanda and its implementation.

Rwanda, following the adoption of its National AI Policy in 2022, is committed to positioning itself as a leader in AI innovation within Africa. In support of this vision, the government, with the assistance of GIZ, is spearheading awareness campaigns to educate Rwandan citizens about the implications, benefits, and risks associated with the AI policy. Led by the Ministry of Information Communication Technology and Innovation (MINICT), these initiatives aim to cultivate a knowledgeable society that actively engages in the country's AI agenda.

Recognizing the pivotal role of journalists and media in fostering citizen education and promoting quality AI journalism, the government acknowledges the importance of engaging with these stakeholders.
