According to Detlev Zwick, Dean of the Schulich School of Business, the decision to launch the Tech MBA was driven by the need to adapt to a rapidly changing business environment. "We live in a completely different world, one that's driven and constantly disrupted by technology," he explained.
 
By offering a specialized MBA program focused on technology leadership, the Schulich School of Business seeks to equip students with the skills and knowledge necessary to succeed in today's tech-driven economy. This forward-thinking approach reflects the school's commitment to staying at the forefront of business education and producing graduates who can thrive in an increasingly digital world. York University's Schulich School of Business designed the Tech MBA to address the need for business leaders who are equipped to navigate the rapidly changing, tech-driven landscape of today's economy. The program is a 16-month graduate program that focuses on preparing students for leadership roles in both tech-focused companies and traditional organizations that are becoming more technology-driven.
 
As Dean Detlev Zwick noted, "Every company will become more tech-driven, not just tech-focused companies." In order to succeed in this environment, businesses will need to adopt a more entrepreneurial and less bureaucratic mindset, and the Tech MBA aims to produce graduates who embody this approach. By providing students with a strong foundation in both technology and business leadership, the Schulich School of Business hopes to ensure that its graduates are well-prepared to lead and innovate in a world where technology continues to play an increasingly important role. Schulich's decision to launch the Tech MBA was inspired by the school's growing expertise in business analytics and artificial intelligence, as well as its desire to capitalize on Toronto's status as a burgeoning tech hub.
 
Dean Detlev Zwick explained that Schulich's prior experience in offering Master's programs in business analytics and artificial intelligence, along with the school's internal strengths in teaching and research in these fields, provided a strong foundation for the development of the Tech MBA. Additionally, the school aimed to align itself with Toronto's thriving tech ecosystem, which is widely recognized as one of the world's fastest-growing entrepreneurial hubs. While the curriculum of the Tech MBA covers various tech-related subjects such as digital economics, technology ethics, digital transformation, and tech-oriented strategy, the program's focus is not limited to the tech sector. Instead, it aims to cultivate leaders across industries who possess the mindset and skills of a tech entrepreneur. "We want these graduates to become tech-fluid, competent managers who understand how technology can drive value for a company's customers," Zwick stated, emphasizing the importance of equipping students with the ability to navigate the intersection of technology and business in a wide range of contexts.
 
Despite some high-profile skepticism from entrepreneurs like Elon Musk, Peter Thiel, and Jack Ma regarding the value of an MBA, Schulich's Dean Detlev Zwick argues that the traditional MBA remains an essential training ground for developing cutting-edge leadership skills. Schulich's Tech MBA program aims to blend the benefits of a traditional MBA with the entrepreneurial mindset that is crucial for success in the tech industry. Addressing critiques that MBAs often focus too heavily on theory at the expense of practical experience, Zwick emphasized that Schulich's Tech MBA places significant emphasis on experiential learning. The program includes internships, exposure to Toronto's tech scene, case studies, simulations, guest lectures, and a capstone field study project. Students will also have the opportunity to work with high-potential, pre-Series A startups through a partnership with Toronto tech hub OneEleven.
