Google Lens has been enhanced with artificial intelligence to provide a better search experience

Google has announced a number of new features, as well as some innovative artificial intelligence additions, that will make the Google search experience more seamless and fulfilling for customers.

The most significant changes include MUM enhancements to Google Lens, a redesign of the Google Search outlook, a new MUM-based experience that identifies related topics in a video, the inclusion of Lens in Chrome, the addition of an addressing tool for government, and a couple of other features and enhancements.

As a result of these updates, Google claims that gathering information will be more useful than ever before. Now, here's a quick rundown of everything you need to know about it:

MUM enhancements to Google Lens

As part of something called the Multitask Unified Model, Google has announced that they have reached a critical milestone in the understanding of information (MUM). Since the beginning of this year, Google's team has been experimenting with MUM's powerful capabilities, according to the company.

It is capable of comprehending information in a variety of formats, including text, images, and video, all at the same time. It can also draw conclusions from and make connections between various concepts, topics, and ideas about the world that are presented.

They demonstrated a new way to search with Google Lens to demonstrate its ability to add text and questions to visual searches as well as ask questions about what the user is currently viewing. So, if you see a shirt you like, but the pattern on the socks is something you prefer, you can point your camera at it and ask that question.

Aside from that, the new MUM-based experience will recognize related topics from a video, even if the topic isn't explicitly mentioned in the video itself.

MUM will be available on Google Lens in the coming months, with the first version available in English.

New content has been added to ‘About This’ Result.

Google is also adding a "more insights" tab to the 'About This' result panels, which will allow users to learn more about the sources and topics that have been returned by Google Search.

As a result, starting today, users will be able to discover new insights about search results by clicking on the three dots in the upper right corner. These are some of the observations:

Additionally, when available, you will be able to read what a website has to say about itself in its own words, in addition to seeing a description of the source provided by Wikipedia.

When you read what others have written about a website — news articles, reviews, and other helpful background information — it can help you better evaluate sources. • What others have said:

You can find additional information about the topic in the "About the topic" section, which includes things like the most recent news coverage or search results for the same topic from other sources.

This feature will be available in English only in the United States for the next few weeks.

Google also announced that it will be assisting governments and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in providing addresses to individuals and businesses all over the world through its Address Maker service. The feature will make use of Google's open-source Plus Codes system in order to generate unique, functional addresses on a large scale.

The Address Maker program helps put under-served communities on the map in a matter of weeks, allowing them to participate in activities that many people take for granted, such as voting, opening a bank account, applying for a job, or even getting packages delivered.

In a recent announcement, Google revealed that governments and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in countries such as The Gambia, India, South Africa, Kenya, and the United States are already using Address Maker, with more partners on the way.

Earlier this year, Google released a wildfire boundary map that was powered by satellite data, allowing people to quickly understand the approximate size and location of the fire — all from their mobile device. Now, with the addition of a new layer on Google Maps, Google is expanding its coverage and bringing all wildfire information together in one place.

In the event that any local governments have provided emergency websites, phone numbers, and evacuation information, the layer will include those details. Additionally, when available, you can view specifics about the fire, such as its status as a contained fire, the number of acres that have been burned, and the date that this information was last updated.

This new update will be available on Android, iOS, and the desktop in October across all platforms.

In addition, Google introduced Tree Canopy data, a new feature that uses aerial imagery and advanced artificial intelligence capabilities to identify areas of a city that are most at risk of experiencing rapidly rising temperatures in the near future.

According to Google, this is consistent with the Tree Canopy tool developed by the Environmental Insights Explorer (EIE), which was piloted last year in Los Angeles, California.

Detailed information on tree canopy has emerged as a critical component of the city's long-term goal of increasing tree shade by at least 50 percent by 2028.

Local governments now have free access to Tree Canopy data, which provides them with valuable insights into where to plant trees in order to increase shade and reduce heat. Google has announced that it will be expanding the Tree Canopy tool to over 100 cities around the world, including cities such as Guadalajara, London, Sydney, and Toronto, during the first half of 2022, as part of its ongoing commitment to environmental sustainability.

There were a number of other exciting announcements from Google

Lens Mode: Beginning soon, iOS users will be able to access a new button in the Google app that will allow them to search for all of the images on a page using Google Lens. For the time being, this will only be available in the United States.

Google Lens on the desktop: Google is also bringing Google Lens to the desktop version of Chrome. Users will be able to select images, videos, and text content on a website that has Lens installed in order to quickly see search results in the same tab — without having to leave the website.

More shoppable Search results: Google is making it easier to browse for apparel on mobile right from your Search results page, making it more shoppable. Google, for example, will show you a visual feed of jackets in various colors and styles, as well as other useful information such as local shops, style guides, and videos, when you search for "cropped jackets."

Powered by Google's Shopping Graph, which contains more than 24 billion listings of products, inventory, and merchants in real time, this new experience is powered by Google's Shopping Graph. At this time, this experience is only available in the United States.
