Here’s the robotaxi that will be available on the Lyft app in 2023

Additional information about Motional's upcoming robotaxi, as well as some of the vehicle's first images, have been revealed by the autonomous vehicle company formed by Hyundai and Aptiv. Customers will be able to hail rides in this vehicle through the Lyft app by 2023, according to the company's collaboration with the ride-hailing service.

Early this year, Motional announced that it would begin operations with the Hyundai Ioniq 5, an all-electric crossover vehicle. The number of vehicles the company intends to acquire, as well as the location where they will eventually be deployed for its robotaxi service, have not been disclosed. It is currently collaborating with Lyft to operate a fleet of BMW 5 series vehicles in Las Vegas, which will be used for transportation services.

In addition to cameras, radar, and lidar, the Motional robotaxi will be equipped with "over 30 sensors," including cameras, radar, and lidar, all of which will be prominently displayed on the vehicle's exterior to aid in its identification as a self-driving car. In addition to providing a 360-degree field of vision for the vehicle, the sensors also provide high-resolution images as well as the ability to detect objects at a great distance.

Under certain conditions, the vehicle will be equipped with the hardware and software necessary for Level 4 autonomous driving, which means it will be capable of operating without the assistance of a human behind the wheel. Without using safety drivers, Motional had previously tested its vehicles on public roads in Las Vegas without a safety driver.

In terms of Motional's robotaxi, the Ioniq 5 is a fascinating option to consider. In addition to having a range of nearly 300 miles on one charge, Hyundai claims the vehicle has a two-way charging feature capable of delivering up to 3.6kW of power in either direction. Furthermore, it will be built on Hyundai's new Electric-Global Modular Platform (E-GMP), which the automaker claims will serve as the foundation for an entire family of electric vehicles in the future.

"A spacious, comfortable space for passengers to work, relax, or socialize during their driverless ride," according to Motional, will be provided by E-GMP. The company also teased a passenger experience that will include a "interior suite of rider-focused interfaces" that will allow customers to add an additional stop to their trip even when the driver is not present, among other features. Motional claims that it will "revolutionize the ride hailing industry" with its driverless technology.

After previously developing its own autonomous vehicle technology, Lyft sold the entire division to a Toyota subsidiary for $550 million in a recently completed transaction.
