How do I change the name of a network connection in Windows 11?

Ethernet, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and so on are some of the names that Windows assigns to each network as a default. While renaming the network has no effect on anything other than the network's title, it may make it easier for you to identify the network in the future. If you would prefer to refer to your network adapters by a different name, there are a few options for you to consider.

The most straightforward method is to use the Settings menu. Alternatively, you can use the Control Panel or even the Registry Editor to perform the same task.

Using the Windows Settings application, you can change the network name in Windows 11

For your network adapters, there is a straightforward Rename option in the System Preferences. Our preferred method is the one described above because it is by far the most straightforward.

1. Open Settings by typing "Settings" into the search bar or pressing the WIN+i keyboard shortcut to bring up the settings menu.

2. On the left-hand side, select Network & internet, followed by Advanced network settings on the right-hand side.

3. Change the name of an existing network by selecting it and then clicking Rename.

4. In the Name box, type a new name, and then press the Save button.

Using the Control Panel, you can change the network name in Windows 11

Changing the network name can also be done through the Control Panel, which is yet another option. This method may be more familiar to you because it was previously employed by Microsoft in previous versions of the operating system.

1. Go to the Control Panel and click on it. You can also execute the control command directly from the Run dialog box, which is the quickest and most straightforward method of finding it.

2. The Network and Internet > Network Sharing Center option can be found in the menu bar. You can simply look for and select the second option from the list of icons if you do not see the first option on your screen.

3. Select Change adapter settings from the menu on the left.

4. From the context menu of the network name you wish to change, select Rename from the drop-down menu.

5. Make any necessary changes to the network name and hit the Enter key to save your modifications.

Using the Registry Editor, you can change the network name in Windows 11

Change the network name in Windows 11 using this third method, which is more involved and potentially dangerous than the previous two methods. if you enjoy working in the Windows Registry, or if you need to know what to change so that you can create a script to edit a network name, then these steps are for you.

1. Open the Registry Editor by double-clicking on it. If you want to find something quickly, you can search for it in the taskbar.

2. Locate the following registry key in the computer's registry:

HKEY LOCAL MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Network

3. Expand the first key to reveal several additional keys by pressing it multiple times. Each key corresponds to one of the various network adapters that you have installed on your computer.

4. Expand one of those keys (it doesn't matter which one you choose), and then click the Connection button. If you don't know which key to press, just scroll down the list until you find it.

5. Look for the word "Name" on the right side of the screen. The current network name is represented by the value of the Data column.

6. Until you've found the key that corresponds to your new network name, repeat steps 4 and 5 second time.

7. Double-click Name and make any necessary changes to reflect the new name.

8. Choosing OK will save the modifications. It is necessary to log out of your account and restart your computer if the change does not take effect immediately.
