Imagine that You've got your phone in your hand and you want to share a video with gathered friends or family. There are no wireless streaming option for the TV, no Chromecast, Fire TV just an Xbox One. Is there a way to cast to an Xbox One console?
Thanks to AirPlay, Miracast, and third-party apps, mirroring your mobile phone to an Xbox One is simple. Here's what you need to know.
The Easiest Way To Cast From Your Smartphone To Xbox One
If you're using Android, you can probably cast from your smartphone to Xbox One without installing any additional software. Thanks to the Miracast standard, Android devices can be mirrored to other hardware---TVs, set-top boxes, media streamers, and consoles.
However, not all Android phones can do this natively. Others have different names for the technology.
- Samsung labels it Smart View (Quick Launch > Smart View)
- LG refers to Wireless Display (Settings > Connected devices > Screen sharing)
- HTC uses HTC Connect (swipe up with three fingers)
- Sony calls it Mirroring (Settings > Device connection > Screen mirroring)
Using an iPhone? AirPlay is built in, enabling instant streaming or mirroring from your device to an Xbox One. You can activate this by swiping up to open the Control Center and choosing Screen Mirroring. When your Xbox One is listed, tap this to start mirroring content to your console.
With your phone ready to cast, you will need some software installed on your Xbox One. Two options are available here:
- AirServer: costing $20 this is an expensive app but supports AirPlay, Miracast, and Google Cast. This means you can mirror iOS, macOS, Chromebook, Android, and even Windows 10.
- AirReceiver: this is a much cheaper options at around $3, with a free trial into the bargain. However, this app is limited to only AirPlay and Google Cast.
Both offer a free trial to help you find out which of them is suitable for your needs. Choose the one that suits you, install it, then use your device to start streaming to your Xbox One.
How To Cast To Xbox One Using YouTube
Want to share that awesome new YouTube video with people in the room? Streaming directly to your Xbox One is the best way to do this, if you have the YouTube application installed. You will find it in the Microsoft Store.
This solution works for Android and iPhone devices, as well as for iPads.
Together with the YouTube application for Xbox One, you will need to make sure of two other things:
- The Xbox One and your mobile device are both on the same network
- You're signed into the same account on both devices
With that done, look for the video, then tap on the Cast button in the video window. This would display the Cast to menu, which would list suitable devices on your network. Tap on the XboxOne option. Note that "XboxOne" is the default name for your console you might have changed this previously. Now it is playing, sit back to enjoy the video.

With the Xbox One Media Player application, you can then browse the device, locate the file you want to watch, and stream it across your network.
Start by confirming your phone supports DLNA. On Android:
- Click Settings
- Use the search feature and enter "dlna"
- Tap Media server
- Tap Share media
You can also set a specific server name if you wish. You should note that some Android devices may not support DLNA. Again, check the device's support page for details.
