How to Change the Tracking Speed for Mouse on Mac or Trackpad

How to Change the Tracking Speed for Mouse on Mac or Trackpad.

The cursor primarily is the way you can interact with your Mac’s screen. If the cursor speed is too slow—or too fast—it can spoil your fun and experience. Here’s how you can change the tracking speed for your trackpad and your mouse on Mac.

MacOS has an independent tracking speed controls for the mouse and trackpad. We will cover both of these methods below.

Changing the Track Speed for a Trackpad on your Mac

When you first start to set it up, the built-in trackpad on the MacBook can seem a bit slow. Itbis very possible for you to increase or decrease the tracking speed of the trackpad from System Preferences.

1. To get started, click the Apple icon in the top-left corner of the screen and choose the “System Preferences” option.

2. Select System Preferences from Apple Menu in Big Sur

3. Next, go to the “Trackpad” section.

4. Go to Trackpad from System Preferences

5. Now, switch to the “Point & Click” tab located at the top, and then use the slider in the “Tracking Speed” section to increase or to decrease the tracking speed.

6. Change Tracking Speed for Mouse on Mac

7. By default, the tracking speed is set to level 4, but you can take it all the way up to level 10.

Change the Tracking Speed for a Mouse on Your Mac

When you make use of an external mouse with your Mac (This can be the third-party mouse or the Magic Mouse.), you might find the tracking speed to be very slow. You can increase this from the System Preferences.

1. First, connect your mouse to your Mac using either the Bluetooth or USB. Then, click the Apple icon in the top-left corner of the screen and choose the “System Preferences” option.

2. Select System Preferences from Apple Menu in Big Sur

3. Here, go to the “Mouse” section.

4. Go to Mouse from System Preferences

5. From the “Point & Click” tab, now use the slider in the “Tracking Speed” section to either increase or decrease the mouse tracking speed.

6. Change Tracking Speed for Mouse on Mac

7. If you’re new to the MacBook, you might be wondering, “Where is the right-click button?” Here’s how to right-click on a Mac.

No matter the trackpad you’re using, right-clicking on a MacBook is a very simple technic. Just tap or click (press down) with your two fingers.

If the two-finger tap doesn’t work for you, or if you want to change the action, you can also do so from System Preferences.

1. From the menu bar, Click on the “Apple” button and then select the “System Preferences” option.

2. Click on System Preferences button from Apple menu in menu bar

3. Select the “Trackpad” button.

4. Click on Trackpad from System Preferences

5. In the “Point & Click” area, click on the drop-down menu below where the “Secondary Click” option is. If you choose, you can switch to either the “Click in Bottom Left Corner” or the “Click in Bottom Right Corner” option.

6. Select the trackpad options for right-click. menu

7. While you’re here, you can also explore the section to customize trackpad gestures.

How to Right-Click with the Mouse

If you’re using Apple’s Magic Mouse, you can use the same gestures as that of the trackpad to switch between spaces and for scrolling.

The Magic Mouse does not have any separate right-click button. Instead, the entire of it's mouse top part is clickable. If you click on the mouse left side, it will register as a left-click. In the same way, you can just click on the top-right section of the Magic Mouse for a right-click.

How to Use the Magic Mouse and Right-Click

The same goes for any third-party mouse that you want to use. If it’s connected to your Mac using the Bluetooth or a wired connection, just click on the button on the right side to make a right-click.

How to Right-Click Using a Keyboard

If the right-click button on your mouse or trackpad is broken, you can still make use of the keyboard as a replacement.

Just press and hold the “Control” key (do not be confused with the Command key) while pressing the left-click button on the mouse to register as a right-click.
