How To Disable (and Enable) JavaScript In Google Chrome

How to Disable (and Enable) JavaScript in Google Chrome.

You Might be wondering how a site would look like with or without JavaScript. On Chrome, JavaScript is turned on by default, but you can turn it off it fairly quickly to see how a site would look like without all the moving parts. Here’s how to do that.

Why Should I Enable or Disable JavaScript?

Modern websites usually have several moving parts. Almost every online magazine and blog that you know runs ads to support the site. With JavaScript turned on, you would be able to see these ads (and also to support the site as a result).

Most websites need JavaScript to be turned for all its bells and whistles to work properly, too. For example, if you would like to disable JavaScript in your browser, you can also say goodbye to your automatic timeline updates on Twitter. With JavaScript turned on, you would be able to take advantage of some of the most features that make websites around the web to be great.

There might also come a time, though, when you would want to block ads that are shown on certain sites or just to see how a website looks like without enabling JavaScript. In Google Chrome, you can turn off JavaScript completely, or do that on a per-site basis. If you have a change in your heart, later on, it is very easy to re-enable JavaScript.

Here’s how it’s done.

Disable and Enable JavaScript in Chrome’s Settings

The easiest way to get to the JavaScript options menu on Google Chrome is by entering this URL in the address bar in your Google Chrome:

Chrome://settings/content/javascript

you can also, go manually towards the bottom of the drop-down menu that comes up, choose “Settings”.

Also, you can search for the “Privacy and Security” section and choose “Site Settings”.

By default, JavaScript is enabled, so, to disable JavaScript, just click on the slider next to the “Allowed” option. Enable JavaScript again by clicking on the slider again.

Allow or Block JavaScript on Specific Sites

As mentioned earlier, you can also enable or disable JavaScript for a particular site. To do this, go back to the JavaScript settings menu as above, Once there, you will see a “Block” and “Allow” section. choose “Add” which is next to Block (1) or Allow (2), depending on if you want to disable or enable JavaScript on a site.

The “Add A Site” window should come up at this point. Enter the site URL, then click on the “Add” button next to it.

The site will now come up in your “Block” or “Allow” list, which means that next time you visit that website, JavaScript will be disabled or enabled, as you have chosen.

Disable JavaScript with Chrome DevTools for Testing

If JavaScript is enabled on Chrome and you want to see what a specific website would look like without going through the settings menu, you can also turn off JavaScript from the Chrome’s DevTools while you are on that site. This should only be used for testing purposes, though, as JavaScript would be turned back on once you close the DevTools.

While you’re on the site, open your DevTools. You can do this by right-clicking anywhere on the site and selecting “Inspect”.

Once you are in DevTools, open up the Command menu by pressing the Control + Shift + P (Windows) or Command + Shift + P (Mac).

In the search bar of the Command menu, enter in “JavaScript”, choose “Disable JavaScript”, and then press the Enter key to run the disable JavaScript command.

JavaScript is now turned off for this site. You can hover over the yellow warning icon that is next to the “Sources” tab to verify that javascript is disabled.
